I unexpectedly find myself with about a week's free time right after Labor Day. I've long wanted to do the Teton Crest trail and have some questions primarily concerning getting reserved campsites. As I understand it, a portion of the sites are left for walk-ups. Although a few things still have to fall into place, if I go I would begin the hike the day after Labor Day - Sept 3rd and probably take 3 nights - 4 days for it's entirety. So, what are the chances of getting a walk-in permit for back country sites in that time frame? If it doesn't work out, I'm thinking of heading on down to the Winds, but would really like to do the Teton Crest. Any comments on campsites or suggestions for the hike in general, would be greatly appreciated.
As always, thanks for your advice and time.

You should have great options when you do a walk up permit early in the morning. Be prepared to go either direction. If you do end up southbound be sure you turn around every so often for the views.
Entirety? IMO doing the Tram and skipping Phillips Pass, etc. is a mistake if you like wildlife, but if you're not doing a 4th night you're probably gonna abbreviate the hike like most do these days. Either way it's a great time so HYOH.
In another thread I saw someone skipping a usually legendary night in Alaska Basin. That's a shame in my opinion. While lots of folks like Sunset Lake Mirror Lake is my favorite there. If you were to add a night dayhiking Static Peak is special. I would definitely try for Holly Lake first or last night. Camping high in the Southfork is cool. Avalanche Divide a great little hike. Not sure if Death Canyon Shelf will have water, been dry here last month and Spring came early. I'd ask the PS if that little spring is still going up on the Shelf. With Lake Multitude there not a fan of spending the night in the Northfork.
The Winds could be heavily impacted by upcoming prescribed burns. Let me know if you want some great options for the Absaroka or Gros Ventre.
