Saw it advertised as part of a MSR Alpine cookset but I don't think it is.

Do you have any other pictures? It's kinda hard to tell without seeing how big it is, how deep it is, does it have a handle, or a lid, etc. From that picture I can't tell if that's the size of a soda can, or a large group cooking pot, or anything in between. An exterior picture would help. Can you tell whether it's aluminum or titanium?
ETA: I guess you say you "saw it advertised," so you might not have any other info. With that nondescript photo, it's pretty hard to tell.

Here is the uncropped picture to show scale. The cookset is an MSR Alpine and I don't believe it is part of that. Nor it is part of the Apex II stove in the foreground although it looks like it may be a stove/cooking system of some sort.

Just guessing here, but it looks like a windscreen for a stove, probably not an original part of the MSR cookset, maybe even homemade.

I was thinking part of an alcohol stove setup. Something alone the lines of this Trangia www.campsaver.com/25-5-ul-stoveDoesn't look homemade, though. Too finished.

Looks like it would help when baking, by keeping the flames from direct contact with the bottom of the pot. I have no idea if that is the original function, or just something I see it might do.

Not that I'm having a '70s flashback or anything, but that whole setup looks like some sort of bong/hookah rig. Nowadays it'd probably be a meth lab.

Maybe a house stove burner drip pan that's been modified to be a wind screen?

I was thinking some kind of heat diffuser or exchanger.

Yes it is a stove heat shield (drop it in over the pot holders, maybe able to twist and lock into position) but I doubt very much it is an MSR product.
