Stunning, as always! In some of the photos, the grass/ground cover looks like velvet. I also like the photos contrasting rock/boulder sizes, the massive vs. the much smaller ones, embedded in stunningly green foliage.

I also like the photos contrasting rock/boulder sizes, the massive vs. the much smaller ones, embedded in stunningly green foliage. That rockscape is my favorite part of the hike. Obviously, contrasting it with the green foliage makes it (or the foliage, whichever is your preference) stand out that much more. PS. Most, if not all, of the boulders in the pictures are huge. They only look small because they are some distance away. If you're ever in the area, and don't mind a bit of scrambling, I would highly recommend hiking atop that granite.

GaliWalker , thanks for the information and suggestion. I do hope to get to the Virginia and W. Virginia area sometime in the next year or so, but will do some geological research on the area first. Geological background helps put everything in perspective for me so I can sit and imagine the scene millions if not billions of years ago. And I'm fascinated by the beautifully worn slopes vs. the stark, harsh granite, and especially the interesting configuration in the last photo, as if a large hand reached down from the sky, piled up boulders, then spread foliage in and around to heighten the contrast. I'm also intrigued by the 4th, 5th and 7th configurations, as if a giant knife cut through to separate some of the boulders.

I want to get up to SNP sometime soon! You should try for mid October, when the oaks will be red.
