I went to RMNP on Saturday, hoping to snowshoe, but the wind was blowing too hard (40+mph). It made for some beautiful cloud formations, though. I could have sat and watched the changing clouds all day.

Small frozen stream among mossy boulders... Is it completely frozen or was there some still running underneath all of that? I'm fascinated by this picture because I don't think I've ever seen a stream frozen like this before.

Small frozen stream among mossy boulders... Is it completely frozen or was there some still running underneath all of that? I'm fascinated by this picture because I don't think I've ever seen a stream frozen like this before. It was frozen solid and probably a couple feet thick. I don't think there was much of a trickle below or above the stream. The photo was taken in February of 2002 near the source of Nelson Creek in Black Elk Wilderness, Black Hills. The area had had very little snow that winter, but the previous week had hardly gotten above freezing. With temperatures dipping to around -20°F for a week, any trickle of water from the spring above this area never flowed far before freezing on top previous layers of ice. When I arrived to this area fairly early in the morning and took multiple photos, the ice was not even wet, but it meandered through the rocks at least a hundred feet or more in the same pattern of frozen stream. The moss looked green because we had had no snow. The spring had been flowing from previous summer's water table. So when temperatures warmed just a bit, the water flowed only far enough to freeze on top previous layers of ice.

Shall I take some pictures of the glorious mud everywhere?
This winter sucks.

Winter of 1995 at 8000' in the Huachuca Mountains, southern Arizona, six miles from Mexico. This wasn't the first time I've had to set up on the trail. Sometimes, it's the only level piece of ground around.

I confess, as much as I'm liking the snowy photos, look how many are from past seasons? I'm looking forward to a switch to Spring, with leaves coming out, new shoots and flowers...Tra la tra la. One more month!

This past weekend we travelled to Vermont for a ski weekend. My little girl, who has been skiing for 3 years now, went from an unaggressive timid snowplower to an Olympic-caliber bomber who was rivaling her Dad in a matter of 3 runs.
