Greetings Everyone!
A couple of friends and I are flying into Fresno from Wisconsin in late May (18th-26th). Our original plan was to find a 5-day trip in Yosemite somewhere, but from what I understand the snowfall has been heavy this year and it doesn't look like something we should count on... Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know enough about the area.
Regardless, we would love some suggestions for backup plans in the event that Yosemite doesn't work out for us. Here is what we are looking for: - 4 or 5 day hiking trip - 30-50 miles of trail (Preferably a loop) - Within a 2-4 hour drive from Fresno
I've sort of looked into Los Padres and Pinnacles NP, but I'm wondering if people who know the area a little (or a lot) better than I do will have any better ideas.
Thanks in advance, -laxhixe

Call and ask the rangers about lower elevations for Yosemite. Something out of Hetch Hetchy will likely work.

There's no backpacking in Pinnacles NP. Los Padres is my back yard. Check my More California Green thread in Storytelling. There are a lot of snow-free options in the Los Padres NF. Before making a recommendation I'd need to know how comfortable you are with bad trails and route-finding. Send me a direct message if you like.

Yosemite in the Hetch Hetchy region ( but check on the status of Wapama Fall crossing.

Within a 2-4 hour drive from Fresno I'd look at something in the southern sierra out of Lodgepole or Crescent Meadow in Sequoia NP. Call the RS. If you are comfortable going off trail there are plenty of options visiting the sequoia groves. Although bushwacking will be an issue. Never been to Hetchy Hecthy, but have heard it's a good option that time of year. Watch out for buzzworms at the lower elevations (so I've heard). There is also Dinkey Lakes.

Might also check on routes out of Road End in Kings Canyon.
