That guy is very lucky. But he ignored the crossing gate and went around it. Not a smart way to ride a bike.

You can't win the Darwin Award if you live. Unless you get your bee-bees cut off...

VERY lucky, from the photo he got hit by the front shockwave of air and probably never touched the train. A slower train pushing less air out of the way and he'd have been crushed for sure ironically enough.

Wow.
I think HSF's right about the air/shock wave. He gets there a half-second (quarter-second?) sooner and he's a splatter on a windshield. Lucky, and hopefully he learned his lesson about what railroad gates are for.

People who go around RR gates boggle my mind. He's a lucky man, and we can hope now a wiser one.

I was at a RR crossing many years ago backed up waiting for a train to finish going past at about 50mph and I was 4th back in a long string of vehicles and so got to see what happened. A bicyclist came riding past like he was just going to the gates. Nope, he swerved around the overlapping crossbars and into the moving train. Rather nasty since he actually managed to go between 2 RR cars. Very messy but an obvious suicide. That was a Darwin Award.
His family then sued the RR (they ultimately lost) because they claimed the gates should have prevented him from reaching the tracks. Maybe so but the train was already speeding by with a whole line of waiting cars and it's not like it was invisible.

His family then sued the RR (they ultimately lost) My husband works for a railroad -- usually they settle out of court because although they'll pay out a bundle (even when it's totally not their fault), it's less expensive than losing in court, which is pretty much inevitable. An amazing number of accidents happen when people just drive into the side of a moving train. Craziness.

In this case there were several vehicles waiting at the crossing with many witnesses that it was a deliberate act and the RR was totally blameless.
