As I said it's tough to build a fire when all the wood is several feet under the snow.

Several years ago I found myself two miles down a forest service road which was relatively level. It snowed about four to six inches, then sleeted, then rained, then froze fairly solid about an inch thick on top of the snow. My 4WD truck with three 50 lb sand bags over the rear axel got about a mile down the road before I got stuck on a slight incline. The tires would break through the ice topped snow and then be unable to climb back on top of the ice but it was deep enough to be unable to push through it. I had for gotten my chains. I finally got through to a friend to bring me my chains. Once I got the chains on I was able to climb the slight incline and get out to the highway. Since, I have always remembered to bring my chains.
