Lithium-ion battery tech declines over time and REALLY takes a dive if overheated at any time.
That said: won't hold a charge? Return for repair/replacement as it's sort of useless as is.
ETA: Speaking of alternatives, these days would a simply gravity fed cartridge fill the same function?

Back when I was getting set up for backpacking I'd been told by a few people who I trust that Steripens of all shapes and sizes are plagued with power issues. I've always avoided them because of that advice. That is my not-so-extensive experience with them.

I had a Steripen. I used it less then a summer before the batteries went dead on me whiles filling up our water bottles. My fall back was to use my wife's Sawyer Squeeze. I never did buy new batteries for the Steripen. The fail in the field experience for something as criticaal as water was not to my liking.

Interesting as I guess everyone has a different experience. I've been using mine now for at least 5 years and love it. I always carry an extra set of AA lithium batteries as the weight is negligible. I had to replace them for the first time on this summer's trip. Pop in new batteries and you're all set.
However, after saying all of that. If I ever have issues with mine I'll be getting a Sawyer squeeze system. Cheap, weigh hardly anything, and easy to maintain and doesn't depend on batteries.

That's one advantage of replaceable batteries: the problem here being for the extra compact unit the battery is a rechargeable built-in as I understand it.
