I looked at a couple of backpacks today at REI. I was going to ask an opinion regarding the 2 different brands, but already read comments on each, so I'll refrain from that question.
I do, however, have a question about the sizes in a flyer I picked up from REI. I'll go back and get fitted, so I don't really need to know, but am curious...
When the chart for the various backpacks says "Fits torso", what does that number represent? One backpack I looked at fits 18-21'.
Also, the backpack comes in sizes S,M,L and XL. What does the size correlate to?

Just because they state a specific size, in general they tend to run a bit small. That is what Dan McHale said after checking out packs in the store. Considering he is a top level custom pack maker, I trust his opinion.

The salesman/employee at REI was very helpful in assisting me regarding backpacks. He helped me try on several. I've decided to go with the Gregory Baltoro 65. That was the most comfortable pack for me.

That was the most comfortable pack for me. And that is the bottom line. I think a 65 is a nice size--big enough to carry a week's worth of food and gear, but not big enough to carry a bunch of carp you don't need
