Mods, if this is not cool then take it down.
All,
I'm currently in the process of planning/forming a backpacking based ministry with my church and the graduate program that I am in (Masters in Theo). After talking to quite a few college aged and 20-something individuals, they liked the idea of backpacking events geared toward them. This would be affiliated with my church and we would plan and take small groups (6 people is the planning number I'm using now) of 20-somethings on weekend trips on a few sections of the AT and on a few other smaller trails in PA. Additionally, for those with some experience we will look at doing a weeklong trek on the Loyalsock trail.
What I'm in the process of doing now is looking into insurance studies, liability studies, trail evaluations, creating devotionals for each short trail, and looking at budgeting for getting equipment. Obviously, most folks won't have equipment so we will need to provide a gear closet to provide packs, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, tents, water filtration, and cook kits. Unfortunately I'm not sure what my start up money is going to be.
Depending on how the insurance study/liability study comes out, we will start progressing down the road of creating literature for prospective attendees and start trying to build a gear locker. If it is acceptable here, I'll put out an email at that time asking if anyone would have some useful stuff to either donate or sell very cheaply. This is going to initially be an adventure in extreme thrift, but hopefully in short time I can put together acceptable lending gear for some great hikes that build future interest in these young people, both in their faith and in backpacking.
Thanks and if it is acceptable I'll put out my plea in a little while,
Crawford
