Hello,
My sons (15 and 20) want to do another hike this year. We spent some time around the Grand Tetons in 2017. I’m thinking about doing part of the PCT with them this spring or fall. I want to avoid the extreme heat.
Is there a section of the PCT anyone would suggest for a 7 to 10 day hike? Are there sections that are more scenic? Also, are there any restrictions on hammocks?

How late in the Spring, or how early in the Fall? What will you do for a shuttle? Sept in Oregon or Washington is a wonderful time to hike there. Plenty of trees, and no restrictions on hammocks. You could start at Mt. Hood and walk South until you had had enough. Would need a shuttle to get back to your car.

Not sure why Washington didn’t cross my mind.
I haven’t figured out exact dates yet, wanted to research best times of the year to go and then set a date. Also need to figure out the ground transportation as well.
Thanks!

PCT alumni... For me the best part of the trail was between Kennedy Meadows South and Kennedy Meadows North...all in California. Have fun!

I have proximity bias to the section from Belden to Old Station. I day hike through there every year. Old Station to Burney is too hot and dry to repeat.

Logistics wise something through the Sierra is simplest with Eastern Sierra Transit Authority running from Lone Pine to Reno and many entry/exit trailheads to select from. www.estransit.comThough for that high up “spring” won’t work as anything other than a snow mountaineering route. But again due to elevation mid July through September isn’t a “heat” season. The higher passes hold snow for most of that time in a heavy year for a reason.

The PCT along the John Muir Trail is breathtaking but crowded. Could be done late season when the nights are long if you're not solo.
The Goat Rocks in Washington are really nice, but takes only a few days to hike through.
The parts I really want to hike are Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass and Stehekin to the Canadian border. Permits would be easy.
I've had the best conditions in the Sierra Nevada in August and in Washington in July.

Sept in Oregon or Washington is a wonderful time to hike there. MMM! Berries. Makes for low mileage days as you graze your way down the trail.

Stehekin to the Canadian border. That would be my vote. Challenging terrain. Wonderful views if the weather cooperates.

Desolation is highly regarded if you can get in. I've been exploring the Tahoe rim trail (N. kingsbury-hwy50) in snowshoes (not nearly enough). Very cool trail with views of the lake and desolation around every turn. ibb.co/60thpjJ
