In response to a FB question Yosemite responded there’s no current set date to reopen Tioga Rd. and that indeed this may be its winter closure.

30” snow, 60 mph winds. This is a good start. /

Only indirectly related to the road - I find it interesting how local names find their way around the country. Tioga is an Iroquois word for a river confluence. It is a common name near the border NY and PA.
Related to the road - Do snowmobilers and XC skiers take advantage of the road closure?

I’ve noticed “Tioga” around there recently and wondered The closed roads are available for XC, two classic routes are out to Glacier Pt. in Glacier Pt. rd. and in from the east side on Tioga Rd. to Tuolumne Meadows where there is a winter ranger station and hut. www.nps.gov/yose/blogs/tmconditions.htmThe closed roads aren’t available to snowmobiles. Tioga runs through a number of really nasty avalanche zones and that may be part of the issue. On Glacier Pt rd they machine set tracks and provide a skate lane. www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/upload/badger-winter.pdf

On Glacier Pt rd they machine set tracks and provide a skate lane. When did they start doing that? Do they charge for skiing the road since it is groomed? Boo!

Interesting. I've skinned up to Glacier Point several times in the late 80's/early '90s and it wasn't groomed. Good road though for a groomed trail and skate track. Seems weird to me but it makes sense when I think about it.

At some point they moved the Nordic rental program up there (maybe in response to less and less snow reaching the Valley, which had been an epic venue for at least one of my Citizen Races there): it may have started in support of that. Shrug.
Still lots of marked but not otherwise prepped trails left to simply ski.
