Did the same 20 years ago when I went to Linfield College, but this time chose the east side of the Cascades. The west was too wet for my liking... Got a promotion to Public Affairs Specialist working to support the Wallowa-Whitman, Umatilla, and Malheur National Forests with their forest plan revision. Long time coming, I've been paying my dues for a while!
So excited, so many new forests and parks to explore! After 8.5 years of exploring here I've just about tapped out everything, at least within a couple of hours. The Eagle Cap Wilderness looks especially inviting - anyone hike out that way? And I'll be able to visit my best friend more often, she lives in Seattle.

Woo-hoo! Congrats I've not explored that area very much, but there's some interesting country out there. So where will you be living?

Sounds like fun. Big area to explore. Moving to Baker City vicinity?
Congrats!

What town will you be living in? The Wallowas are nice. I've been hiking there once. You'll also be close to the 7 Devils in Idaho, plus the McCall mtns, the Sawtooths, and White Clouds.

Pendleton would be the best town for that grouping. John Day would be OK, but a bit small for most folks. Plenty to hike in the area, and canoe also.
Umatilla NF -- Rough Fork, Burnt Cabin, Looking Glass, Lake Creek Wallowa-Whitman-- NEE-MO-POO, Frances Lake, Maxwell Lake, Stud Creek
Now, do you want my copy of Pacific Northwest Hiking by Judd & Nelson? I can wait until you move to ship it. That way you won't have to pack it. I don't figure to use it any more except to give advice to others and use as a reference.

Congrats!! What town will you be moving to? I used to spend some time in La Grande. I really liked that town! I have backpacked in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. It is beautiful! But there are bears there :( We had one visit our campsite one night, and found out later she was called the "Sunshine Bear." I know how much you like bears

Good Job Tarol! I don't know a thing about the area, yet I wanted to congratulate you for your accomplishment. Every once in awhile hard word pays off. I hope it's everything you want it to be!

Congrats and welcome to the neighborhood (I'm in SE WA)! Eagle Cap/Wallowas are wonderful, among my favorite places on the planet. And as someone mentioned, you're within reach of Idaho's Seven Devils. These two are right up your alley if you like it dry (air) but wet (beaucoup lakes). Here's my favorite view of Eagle Cap peak:
