I am unable to determine whether or not I can walk into Baxter State Park on an established trail, namely the Katahdin Lake Trail. Looking at the map of Baxter, it appears that there's a trail into the park from the East ... unless it somehow just ends at the park border. The first map from Baxter State Park shows the Katahdin Lake Trail extending out into Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. The second map from Katahdin Woods & Waters shows no such trail, even though from the Baxter map you might extrapolate there's a trailhead somewhere along the loop road by Mile 10 (there's a black dotted line on map 2) or mile 10.7 (a primitive road on map 2). Does anyone know whether an established trail exists here? Note: Both maps are from the same company -- Map Adventures. Thanks, Steve PS: Logically, this would be the International Appalachian Trail, but I can't say for sure.

I notice that the first map does not give a mileage from the lake to the road. Second map shows a logging road (or similar) right where that trail would be expected. That leads me to believe there is a trail there, but it is not a formal / approved trail. Or maybe it was listed on the first map because you're allowed to take the trail from the lake to the road (exiting the park), but not listed on the second map because you're not allowed to take the trail into the park.
Sorry I cant' be of further help.

I heard back from Baxter State Park and got an answer. There is indeed a trail there. It's in fine condition and is part of the International Appalachian Trail.
However, it is not to be used to enter the park. They want people to enter by the road for the most part. As I'm applying for a Special Use Permit, they said they'd let my group hike in. But typically this is not allowed. That's probably why it was taken off the newer map.

Yes, the IAT goes all the way up to the Gaspe Peninsula.
