What is a better trail map for Death Valley, Tom Harrison or Trails Illustrated? Why?
Maybe you like one over the other as a general rule. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I've only used Tom Harrison maps on the JMT. I liked the multi-page maps, so I could keep the map I wanted close, and the others could stay buried, more protected. For my 3 trips to Death Valley, I used a TI map. As I look (online) at the TH map of DV, it doesn't seem any more detailed than the TI one.

Look and see what the scale is: get the more detailed one. Odds are NG but not a lock.
I prefer detail to get a better idea of terrain beyond the trail.

Never been to Death Valley or seen a Tom Harrison map. However, I must have 40-50 Nat Geo maps in my man-cave. There are very useful in trip planning and as HSF remarked better idea of terrain beyond the trail. . This often entails the most difficult navigation issue, which is finding the trail head. Rarely if ever, do I take a Nat Geo map in the field. Slowly transitioning to apps, such as Avenza, Guthook and All Trails for on-trail situations. I'll use USGS 40 minute topo's, or have custom topo's made for off-trail ventures. Being a Mapaholic I'd probably use both Nat Geo and Tom Harrison in the planning phase.

It depends on what kind of trip you're planning. I don't use large scale maps in DV much, other than to look for places I might want to explore. I like slot canyons, and the best maps and descriptions I've found for those are in Michael Digonnet's book. Larger scale maps don't have enough detail and don't show the dry falls that make or break a plan. I'll make photocopies of the sections of the book that I need and put them in my day pack.

Thanks for all the help! The Death Valley NPS site actually has quite detailed topo maps for various hikes. Since I won't really be going off trail, I can probably use either to get a macro view of the park.
