Best day hikes that might be off the usual radar? We plan on doing the Waipi'o valley overnight if weather permits but will be looking for some other day hikes. We are staying in Kona, but will have a car so we are open to anywhere on the island. I've done some research, but haven't come up with much that isn't super touristy.
Touristy or not--crap. I was about to recommend the hikes we did in the national park. It looks like some areas of the park are open again (the active eruption stopped in late May). Anything you can do there is probably worthwhile!
We did also enjoy climbing Mauna Loa. That's serious altitude, and we found a snow patch (that was as far as our boys went. Fortunately, they were old enough to leave them tossing snowballs at each other and hike on).

The diving in Kealakekua Bay is interesting. Lots of freshwater offshore springs has an interesting visual effect. It’s where Cook was killed. Read up on where and where not to go: there’s some culturally sensitive sites on the cliffs for instance.
Convenient to Kailua-Kona. The shoreline counterclockwise from there was terrific.
ETA: I really liked the University of Hawaii maps. But they appear to have gone out of print under that name at any rate. Wilderness Press, in the past had useful hiking guides.

I've snorkeled in Keakakekua Bay, it was awesome! We are staying adjacent to Kahalu’u Beach, which is supposed to have good snorkeling too, so we will definitely check that out. I'll see if I can get my hands on one of those maps. Thank you!
If you are up to a candy maker tour, Big Island Candies is well worth the stop. Most of my hiking on the Big Island was on the Hilo side. I loved walking on the black sand beaches, but many of them no longer exist. I was last there a decade ago.
Karl Popper's "Paradox of Tolerance". If we tolerate intolerance, intolerance will flourish. In other words: if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually destroyed by the intolerant. Tolerating bigotry allows bigotry to spread. Exclusion isn't always a dirty word. Tell your local Nazi to F off today.
