Long time since I have been here, just found out the forum moved and it looks WAY better than the last "upgrade" they did....
So my 10 year old son is backpacking with me and I am going to get him some "real" waterproof hiking boots.
I am posting this here because he wears a size 8.5 right now in normal shoes, so not really "kid" sized shoes.
My question is that I am probably going to spend about $100 on a pair of shoes. I was thinking of going up to a 10 for him in order to get some time out of them....a year is my hope.
I normally wear a size up from my regular shoes when hiking and that works well.
Has anyone got any experience sizing up more than a full size? I am wondering if I could dare get a 10 or even a 10.5 and put thick socks on him and still get a good fit for him.
After our last hike turned into an epic bushwack along the Olympic coast he is dead set on waterproof boots as the cheap "trail runners" he was wearing were pretty toast.
Anyone with ideas about up sized shoes I would appreciate the feedback.....REI is having a great sale right now and I am looking at a couple different boots for him.
Thanks for the help everyone!

You should only size up to what will fit him now, factoring in the swelling from a day pounding on the trail. But don't get footwear that is intentionally too big with the goal that he can grow into them, that's just asking for blisters now.

I kinda figured that was the answer.....but was hoping someone would talk me out of it.
Thanks!

Ill-fitting boots are not the answer. I remember my boy out-growing them so fast. It felt like success when the outgrown ones were well-used. Look for deals and make sure he tries them on and likes them. The memories will be better if there aren't sore feet involved.

Our best solution when the boys started needing more expensive hiking shoes was to buy them new for the summer hiking season and then let them wear them to school all winter.
