Note. This is not my photo. It was taken by Jonathan Tasler. But It's great and was taken very near to my house, north of Manhattan, KS. In the background is a little slice of Tuttle Creek Lake, where I live. I'm pretty sure I know almost exactly where the photo was taken--I drive by there every day on my way to/from work.

Beautiful photo. When we drive from Texas to Wisconsin, we go through Matfield Green. We're on the interstate, but that is one of my favorite parts of the drive. I don't think people envision this when they think of Kansas.

Beautiful photo. When we drive from Texas to Wisconsin, we go through Matfield Green. We're on the interstate, but that is one of my favorite parts of the drive. I don't think people envision this when they think of Kansas. Yeah--the turnpike just slices through the southern part of the Flint Hills--they run north from there up to about the Nebraska border. Funny you mentioned Matfield Green: I always remark that that may be the most peaceful, bucolic name for a town I've ever heard. (The town itself is a little more hard scrabbled than the name would indicate.) If you exited the turnpike there and followed that road (K 177) straight north, you'd have a very scenic drive through the Flint Hills and end up in my neck of the woods. That's the route we use when driving to Wichita or points south. It's not the quickest route, but it's very scenic.

Actually, the Flint Hills go down almost to the Oklahoma border.\, although they aren't near as wide there. When I was growing up, our Boy Scout Camp was on the east side of the Flint Hills north of Sedan and we drove from Wichita through the Flint Hills which were the roughest around Grenola. US 166 between Sedan and Cedarville also are in the Flint Hills, but they end pretty quickly south of there. I grew up in Wichita and have always believed the Flint Hill to be a beautiful area. Here is a Kansas Geological Survey overview map of Kansas.

Matfield Green. Didn't think too many people knew of it's existence. Spent a lot of time there as a good chunk is owned by The Land Institute in Salina.

very scenic drive through the Flint Hills I believe we actually did that once when the interstate was closed. Or - maybe - (more likely) it was so that my husband could take pictures of trains. It was a number of years (and many, many side trips for trains) ago so I have a vague recollection of small towns and much beauty. The interstate is so much quicker on a 1,200-mile drive, but scenic is not really the best description. Matfield Green. Didn't think too many people knew of it's existence. I would never have been familiar with it, except for the train connection noted just above!

My wife goes along for the scenery. It used to be my time to read, but for the big trips, my husband goes with his foamer friends. And since he's taken up mountain climbing (initially), backpacking, and hiking, he doesn't have as much time for photography. (Not to mention that North Texas is not a hotbed of scenery!) But he squeezes it in when he can. If you're interested in his work, here's his Flickr link: www.flickr.com/photos/129992105@N08/ He's also a boat foamer, so he has a variety of laker boats photos there, as well. And some backpacking/hiking pics.

North Texas doesn't have scenery? Much much of Oklahoma, but not where I live in Oklahoma as I live in the Ozarks. A great place to backpack and watch trains in the Ouachita Mountains between Mena, Arkansas and Heavener, Oklahoma. I've spent many a night listening to the Kansas City Southern down in the valley while I was on Rich or Bear Mountains, then going down to the valley to take pictures in the Rich Mountain area.

How relaxing would it be to live near that place. You are so lucky and blessed. Such a great scenery.

North Texas doesn't have scenery? Pretty flat and boring! Although wildflowers in April make a nice backdrop.
