I live in Carson City, south of Reno. Reno is booming with high tech companies coming to the Reno-Tahoe Industrial Complex near Fernley. If you are skilled with STEM, good paying jobs can be had. If not, whearhouse jobs and logistic jobs are abundant. Rent is outrageous, housing is expensive. Too many people comming from California and paying cash for houseing have driven up the market. Jobs are non-union, Nevada is a right to work state. Outdoor fun is all four seasons. Hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, ect is abundant. Lake Tahoe is minutes away. In the winter you have world class ski resorts all around the lake to chose from. A small city feel with no gridlock traffic.

Outdoor opportunities abound year around. The sierras out your back door. Close to crapifornia without having to live there and pay the taxes.
Nevada has no state income tax. Sales tax only slightly less than CA for now.

I live in Reno. We're going through a lot of growth right now. Traffic is getting a little worse. Housing is tight so prices have gone up. A lot of new manufacturing companies have opened factories here, but they don't pay that well for unskilled or semi-skilled employees: probably $14/ hr. average with good benefits. A 3 bedroom house is going to cost at least $300k to buy or around $2k/ month to rent.
Like Paula and Whistlepunk said, there are good outdoor recreation opportunities.
I used to think I would never want to move anywhere east of the Rockies; The West is where it's at. Low humidity and everything. But we have been getting smothered in wild fire smoke the past few years---for several weeks some summers. It got so bad this summer I wanted to move east of the Rockies! It's better now.
