There is something about Damascus that just calls out to be bought. The ones in my hoard are safe as heck. They are much too pretty to use, and I still like them enough that it is not time to move them out to make room for new ones. Collecting knives is about the most addictive hobby known to man. There are never enough, and the next one is calling all the time. It is hard to keep the numbers down. My dilemma is that I'm not much of a collector and that knife takes a better edge than my "everyday" knives. The only one that rivals it is another one with staghorn scales that was last sharpened by my Grandfather 40 years ago. He was a wood patternmaker and an incredible perfectionist at honing. I started actually using it a while back, but that's the one I really want to retire.

I have a Gerber Basic, and it was a good purchase. Full tang construction, so it does everything I need it to at only 3.8 ounces. Funny story... I bought it at REI in Denver, then spent 10 days in the backcountry. I was packing stuff in my luggage for the trip home (at Deborah's no less), when I thought to myself "No, don't put the knife in there, it'll be seized by TSA." At the airport security check, I was summoned by TSA. He asked me to explain why I had a knife in my carry-on. D'oh! Thankfully I was able to mail it to myself. I wish I could carry a knife on my person, but I go into too many sensitive areas for my work, and I know that I'd forget I had one on me. In theory, I can't even have one in my SUV. The ridiculous thing about that is my toolbag is chock full of tools that could easily be used as improvised weapons (box cutter, "tomahawk" hammer, screwdrivers, chisels, etc.). But a knife is a "weapon", and therefore banned.

Because, you know, the fact that the blade is 3" or less makes it sooooo less likely to be dangerous than one with, say, a 3.125" blade. They've never said how many of those small knives I'm allowed though.

As the Ag teacher in my high school used to say as he showed off his little micro pocket knife, it might not hurt going in, but wait till I walk around you.

Knife collecting is just as addicting as caffeine or nicotine. Perhaps a bit more. Unless you have been bitten by the bug it will make no sense to you. It starts out innocently and small, then all of a sudden it gets completely out of hand. It is very hard to break this addiction. To my knowledge, it has never been done. After the first couple of dozen, they will multiply at an alarming rate. I have not found a way to stop them. Of course, I really don't want to stop. There are only three or four knives in my brood that have ever been used. The rest have a comfortable life of leisure. They will never be used until I die and someone else acquires them. The pretty ones will probably still not be used. There is no explanation for it, it just is.

I have spent hours at Smokey Mountain Knife works. Lately I've been picking up a few auto openers. A couple of years ago I was on Vacation at Pigeon Forge and spent a very pleasant afternoon at SMKW. They have all the toys that I have only seen in catalogs or online. It was fun to see them and drool over them. A few of them came home with me, but I showed uncommon restraint and actually stayed within my budget. If the right six numbers ever come up, that will be one of the first places that I will invest my money in. The autos are a lot of fun. Now that most states have made them legal it is much easier to add a few to the collection. Some of them are way overpriced, but there are a lot of very good ones out there that are affordable.

A fine knife that is not picked up by metal detectors.

A knife is a tool, not a statement. Amazed this has gone to eight pages. I have to disagree. Knives are both functional and artistic. I think this might be a HYOH thing. Sort of like with cars: for some people, they are a work of art or an extension of their egos. For other of us, they are a tool to be used and abused. I'm horrified by people who baby their cars to the point of not using them fully. Others are appalled that we drive our car in places it was never meant to go.
My own feeling on the knife thing has more to do with my current feeling about "stuff" (having just sorted all of our stuff to put it in storage). If a knife isn't a tool and I don't have use for it, right now I have no room for it in my life. That goes for just about everything else as well (still working on the book problem. Progress has been made, but... ).

The “stuff” topic reminds of a good friend who lived aboard her boat. She once shared that for any purchase she had to weigh it against what item she’d have to discard to make room aboard for the new item. It was a classic Stephens so I understood perfectly.

I would think that most people when it comes down to the final decision will choose the car/auto/whatever that appeals to their sense of beauty. Some people think a plain and utilitarian knife is pure beauty while others will want the wavy steel look in the blade.
