Many of the meals I present in this video are "obvious", but why then do I *never* see anyone with Grape-nuts nor Nido on the trail? Hope you find 1 or 2 ideas in this:

I used to carry Grape-nuts and Nido, 10 years ago. I may go back to it.

So question for those who would know...how do those of us who are lactose intolerant fare with Nido? I like the idea of grapenuts and Nido, but would rather avoid gastrointestinal displeasure.

tomas #1 ingredient in Nido is whole milk, followed by Soy lethicin. I'd guess your reaction to it might be similar to any reaction to milk. If you have lactose intolerance with bad side effects, I wouldn't take this unless you try it at home first. Even then, the risk may be too much. How do you do with soy milk, or almond milk? There are other options, you know. Coconut milk, soy milk, etc... Amazon can be a friend.

Thanks for the link that will be of interest to breakfast oriented people. I have been buying non-fat powdered milk for decades because I occasionally consume it for periods if an old medical issue is occurring. But have never heard of Nido so that is something I have an interest trying out thank you. I do sometimes bring along Quaker Oatmeal packets and if I do, usually eat them dry right out of the package as it is a sweet lightweight treat. In general I tend to bring a lot of food as I am hungry when physically active, however when I eat is unusual.
My body is many years trained for no breakfast, a primary meal mid day, and snacking and or a light meal later in the day. And note many of our ancestors did not eat 3 meals a day. Making meals was often a major chore. There is a theory that eating less frequently with a long daily period of an inactive digestive system without eating close before night sleeping periods may age a person more slowly. I infrequently eat breakfast at home and if I do, that is more likely some sweet pleasure food like a sweet roll.
On wilderness trips I usually rise at dawn and am very busy till later morning when photographic light becomes harsh. At mid day on longer trips am likely to eat one of those Mountain House two-person meals at mid day, then a nap, and take a dip in a lake, laying out in sunshine, before going out for later afternoon adventures. Otherwise if a trail day, likewise am usually up at dawn and carrying the pack in the coolness of early morning without having bothered to eat or drink anything. In either situation usually have a Ziplock bag of Quaker Simply Granola with Oats, Honey, Almond, Raisin Granola in a pocket I can grab and eat if I feel like. Over decades I've occasionally tried many cereals and granolas and have been content to just buy the above expensive Quaker product because it tastes good and my body seems to process it well.

.how do those of us who are lactose intolerant fare with Nido? I'm just learning about this. I sprung for soy milk powder and almond milk powder for our coming trip. Powdered milk contains all the lactose, so you should only have it in the amounts you can tolerate of liquid milk. I've been taking Nido for years, but not Grape Nuts. I can only eat those hot, as they are otherwise too hard to chew. But have never heard of Nido so that is something I have an interest trying out thank you. It's good stuff. Try your local Ranch 99 Market--that's where I get it.

I saw this yesterday and I'm gonna use this. The Nido and Grape Nuts. I don't like breakfast. I don't even like fast food breakfast. So as many calories I can cram down in the morning on the trail without gagging I do. I think it's because I like a massive dinner. 1500+ calories. I'm not sure if that has a lot to do with it or not.

Let the grapenuts soak for a bit. They will chew up easier. As is, they are impossible to destroy while packing them into the bear canister. Holes will be torn into the plastic bags before damage to the cereal. Oh, yeah. Watch out for leaks when you add the cold water. Might even want to add a bowl of some sort in place of eating directly out of the bag.
