Hey there,
I just joined this forum on the search for an active hiking forum with a cool community. I am hiking the Eifel Trail in the west of Germany from Aachen to Trier. I started it in the year I turned 29 with the plan to finish before I turn 30. I didn't. Now, a couple of years later, I am trying again. I am 33 now and I want to finish the trail before I turn 34 - late September next year. The trail is about 330kms long and I hiked the first 3 legs so far. Many of the 15 legs are pretty long - about 20kms. That is too long for me. I am not an experienced hiker and I have a hip condition which makes it hard for me to walk longer distances. I usually cut the legs in half and do about 10 to 12 kms each. Of course that's going to take me twice as long - and I can only walk on the weekends. I plan to walk every Saturday if the weather permits.
I've also decided to record this adventure. You can follow me on youtube if you like.
Anyone else hiking in the vinicity? Come say Hi!
Stefanie

Why not hike on both Saturday and Sunday, spending Saturday night on the trail? That would allow for completing each leg in a weekend while still maintaining only about 10km/day. A one-night pack will be heftier than a day-pack, but still fairly reasonable.
I've not heard of this trail, but I'm going to have to look into it as I'm currently shopping around for international backpacking trails for next summer.

Hi Stefanie! We have been hiking quite some in the Eifel area. Not the complete Eifelsteig, but small pieces. The whole Eifel area is just beautiful ans easily accessible from Belgium, where we hold our head quarters. We were just in September in Germany, close to the village of Düren and found this beautiful lake with healthy beaver population, just out side of the Eifel Park. I have a blog posting about that trip, if you are interested: travelslovelife.wordpress.com/2015/09/28/germany-in-september-nothing-else-needed/Welcome to the forum too!

My favorite sparkling water is Gerolsteiner bottled nearby and with a particularly high mineral content due to past volcanic activity in the region. It is certainly a beautiful area and I will be following your adventures...

@amarug The main reason why I can't do that is because of my hips. I tried in February. We had planned to cut a 24km leg in half and walk it Saturday and Sunday. I had a fairly light backpack and a good one, too, but the additional weight caused so much strain on my hips that I had some significant pain at night and definitely the next morning. We had to drive home Sunday morning because I could not walk any further. From last weekend's trip I had hip pain up until about Wednesday - nothing too severe but definitely noticible. I just need a few days for my hips to rest after about 10kms. I know that's not very far and some people do three times that distance in one day but if I want to have any chance at finishing this without going into surgery afterwards, I need to be careful and allow for my bones to rest enough in between.

gonehiking : Your pictures are great. Yes, the whole Eifel region is very beautiful. I have wanted to do more hikes there for the last couple of years. I love sleeping in a tent, I just can't carry one. But who knows, maybe my bones will man up and I might get to sleep on the trail some time after all.

rwtb123: I used to drink Gerolsteiner when I was a kid but now I find it too sour. Next trip is planned for tomorrow. I hope to have the video up by Sunday.

We hiked about 12kms yesterday. Those first kilometers of leg 4 were pretty tough at times. A few of the climbs were pretty steep. But luckily and surprisingly my hips feel fine today. :D
New video is up on my channel!
