The Summer Day Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don't know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

We live in the moment Then the moment is gone But I am still here To greet the next dawn.
Is time like a book As I turn the next page Or does it stand still As I slowly age?

Any man with a daughter in college that can watch this without getting choked up, ain't human.

Or how about "Life is not unlike a loo roll. The closer to the end, the faster it goes." And there's another uplifting observation! Waxing poetic on the substance of and the finite limit to life will inherently conjure the potentially depressing topic of existentialism. Kierkegaard, father of existentialism, "proposed that each individual—not society or religion—is solely responsible for giving meaning to life and living it passionately and sincerely ("authentically")." I'm thinking that most outdoors-persons have little trouble living neck-deep in their passionate pursuits.

I'm thinking that most outdoors-persons have little trouble living neck-deep in their passionate pursuits. Amen to that. I just always hope the pursuits I'm neck deep in aren't muddy or a thicket of poison oak, or... But seriously, nothing like time in the outdoors to put me back on track and keep the focus on what's important.

I don't mind getting muddy, and I've never reacted to poison oak yet, although Nettles have gotten me. What I'm not a fan of is Heat and biting insects together. And they seem to go together.
