Growing up in a smaller town we had a chip truck serving fries and variations on that theme. Eventually a bannock truck (run by local Aboriginal businessmen) settled in as well.
Down here in the Big Smoke, they number in the many. I haven't partook in those as, much like poutine and other traditionally low-quality/made-from-scraps foods, they have become the hot new thing for the aspiring hipster gourmet to blog about.

I've had some very good barbecue from a local food truck. Mostly, however, I avoid them because it's not the healthiest food around. The food truck movement is growing in Ft. Worth, however, and adding variety, as well. But if I'm at an outdoor craft fair in northern WI, however, you might find me picking up some deep-fried cheese curds.

Most of the fed buildings in downtown DC seem to empty out and head to them during lunch hours. While I agree with Jim that a lot of them are run by hipsters, I've had some good eats. But they are expensive and I'll treat myself to one a month. Bringing my own lunch is still what I do for money savings and health.

We have them on campus once a week, and I've eaten there a couple of times. The food was good, but somewhat over-priced. I usually just bring my lunch.

There are dozens of food trucks (not your daddy's roach coach) around here, with the food quality varying from just ok to VERY good. The price for a typical meal ranges from $7 to $11, not much more than you pay at burger doodle. Eating from one every couple weeks is a treat - gourmet concoctions of many different ethnic groups.
Availability is spotty in my area because the brick and mortar establishments successfully lobbied the local officials to ban them in some municipalities. So much for free enterprise.

It's really picking up in Huntsville. In addition to the regular routes, they have a "gathering" downtown once a month from March/April through October...closing off a street, bringing in as many trucks as fit (usually 25+), local brews served at the Museum of Art in walk-around cups. Lots of variety and all quite tasty. Average prices.

Though I've never eaten at any of them, SF is overrun with the things, with quality and prices all over the landscape.

I used to work at a car dealership years ago. This old guy would come by in an old dodge van. In the back he had a chest of drawers, like a bedroom set chest of drawers, outfitted with a light bulb and full of biscuits. His wife made the biscuits every morning and they were very hot when you got one. Ham, country ham, bacon, egg and cheese. Delicious! ..but the first time I saw it..(shakes head)
