I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. link
I say AMEN! Perhaps other stores will hop on the bandwagon. Black Friday was bad enough, but some stores are now open on Thanksgiving.

Good for them but doesn't change my staying away from mass shopping experiences - after encountering an elderly lady intentionally driving the wrong side of the road with a maniacal gleam in her eye (bypassing a mass of backed up Black Friday traffic). Nowadays people can die..

Good, haven't done that whole holiday thing for decades.

The response on other web forums seems to be overwhelmingly positive.
I never did much shopping that day anyway. Family is more important.

Terrific message to all those retailer corporate bean counters making their employees work during wee hours now on Thanksgiving. Totally un-American.
A message From our CEO
REI is closing on Black Friday.
You read that correctly. On November 27, we'll be closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside.
Here’s why we’re doing it.
For 76 years, our co-op has been dedicated to one thing and one thing only: a life outdoors. We believe that being outside makes our lives better. And Black Friday is the perfect time to remind ourselves of this essential truth.
We're a different kind of company—and while the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we’ll be spending our day a little differently. We’re choosing to opt outside, and want you to come with us.
Jerry Stritzke, President, CEO

They'll miss out on a particular sort of shopper, but I'm okay with that.

It would be my hope that in future years, they just go ahead and give their people a 4 day holiday, paid of course.

Good for REI. I avoid Black Friday like the plague. Let's hope that "outside" does not include the parking lot of Wally World for any REI employees.

Great! Black Friday has always been a hiking or travel day for me. I'm glad more people will get the same opportunity.

Great. I love it. Personally, I haven't been shopping on that weekend for many moons turned into many years.

It made national news last night. The REI CEO told his employees to spend some time outside with family. That takes business philosophy to a different level.
