Be ware that the ONP requires a permit and if one does not have a permit already reserved, the lines are long at the WIC and, instead of your choice of trails and routes, the rangers will assign you trails and routes. I applied for our permit to hike the ONP Coast in Feb. We got issued our permit 30 days later. www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/wilderness-permits.htm

Thanks for pointing this out. I am unaccustomed to backpacking in National Parks, so I didn't realize I needed to apply for a permit so far in advance. We'll have to settle on a route and see if we can get the permit. I think we might go up the East Fork of the Quinault through the Enchanted Valley, then back out at Dosewallips. That would be a fairly leisurely route that could be done in 5 or 6 days, and would cover some nice rain forest and alpine terrain.

Be ware that the road to Dosewallips has been closed since 2002. I think it is a 5 or 7ish mile walk from the DoseWallips Ranger station to the closest parking. Dosewallips River Road

Be ware that the ONP requires a permit and if one does not have a permit already reserved, the lines are long at the WIC and, instead of your choice of trails and routes, the rangers will assign you trails and routes. This only applies to the quota areas. If the group does the Enchanted Valley Dosewallips route they will not be in any quota area and thus will not have any difficulty with the permit for their desired route. Also, the Dosewallips Road is a fairly easy walk out to the parking area, especially exiting out. I always figured it at about 5.5 miles. The biggest issue exiting out Dosewallips is the lack of good eateries for the post-hike food gorge. There really is nothing good on the drive out. Food options on the Olympic Peninsula are kinda lacking outside of Port Angeles, Sequim, and Port Townsend. Going the opposite way by exiting out along the Quinault is even worse! Rumi PS: You can get a permit from either the WIC or the Quinault RS for this. If you want me to get a self registering permit and mail it to you, let me know. I think they still have some around. That would save you a stop and having to be there while they are open.

Thanks a lot, RumiDude , for the clarification and the offer. I may take you up on it, but I think we are going to have to stop by one of the ranger stations anyways, since none of my friends have bear canisters, and we'll need to check them out for the Enchanted Valley area. I'm glad we don't have to apply for any advance permits, and the route sounds just right, and gives us some flexibility if we decide to change things up. Looks like a fairly easy 5 day trip, which will allow us to spend an extra day exploring Anderson Glacier. As the trip gets closer and we get a better idea of where we are going to be staying I may ask you for some restaurant recommendation. I really appreciate everyone's helpful input.

I realize it's too late for the trip in question, but for others I'll add that the Hoh River trail is most definitely not a good trail for beginners in my opinion. It may look moderate on a map, but it's quite steeply banked, often entirely deep mud or a foot underwater, crossed repeatedly with downed trees 3'-5' in diameter -- their trunks thick with slippery moss. And usually raining, of course.
I'd love to hear how the Enchanted Valley trip went, that area along with the three river valleys to the east is my favorite part of the park.

Zalman your description of the Hoh River Trail does not match my own experience, but I only hiked to 5 mile camp before leaving for Seven Lakes. The park service says it is an easy to moderate hike, & well maintained, so I would not expect to find any downed trees across the trail. Sure, trees fall, but the park is pretty good about getting them out of the way fairly quickly. I also found the park to be fairly dry in Aug and Sept.

I'm glad you had an easy go of it Zeke. All I can tell you is that I've walked that trail half a dozen times, at least 3 of them in September, and every time was definitely one of the more arduous hikes I've ever taken for the reasons I mentioned.
I guess 5-mile camp is where the first hut is? I recall one time I was there a moose had gotten its rack caught in the food-hanging chains; it's half-eaten carcass hung there for a couple of weeks before any park personnel could get up to remove it.

Good idea. A place to get out of the smoke.
