The article is not only a very nice tribute to Thoreau, it's a good historical (but brief) synopsis of contributions to the wilderness concept.
It's interesting also how support for the causes Thoreau espoused has been manifested over the years. It's been decades since I've read Kerouac's books, and best recollection is that I associated him more with the "beatnik" and freedom from the confines of civilization movements than with Thoreau's wilderness concepts.
I think rereading some of Thoreau's works would be an appropriate respite, not only to renew admiration for him but also as a diversion from current national events.
I've never been in the Walden Pond area, but I think it would be a memorable place to visit when time (and money) permit. Has anyone else visited that area?
Thanks for sharing this; just reading the article has been very soothing and calming.
