Heya folks,
I find myself with the opportunity to take a week off and go backpacking. I'd like to fly into SEA-TAC and head to the dripping valleys of the western Olympics (I've spent much time there and after a several-year hiatus would love to go back), but obviously it's been an extraordinarily dry year. How are the conditions now, in early September? Obviously it'd still be pretty dry, but am I doing to find myself hacking a lung from the smoke of other fires, or will there still be some peace and clean air in the west-side old growth rain forests?
I would likely head to the Queets, S. Fork Hoh or Quinault valleys, start on the trail and veer to a bit of off-trail exploration from there, about a week total. Any first-hand recent tips on the conditions would be great!
- Mike

So I guess the Paradise Fire is still burning upriver on the Queets? www.nps.gov/olym/learn/management/current-fire-status.htm It's closed anywhere upriver from Bob Creek, so if that's till smoldering in a week or two, the Queets is out. Sigh. Has anyone been to neighboring valleys lately (S. Fork Hoh, Quinault, etc)? How's the air been? Much appreciated, - Mike

Yes, I could do the coast, and I remember your recent trip report there making me miss it. If the smoke is likely still bad in the woods I may consider it.
But I am really in need of some extended solitude for a bit, some tough times have made a need for it. Going off-trail in the rainforest has never let me down in that regard. Most folks just don't go there, which is part of what I love so much about it. The coast is great, and since the summer has passed I would probably get *some* alone time, but a week in the deep wet woods where I don't see another soul for 4-6 days is really some medicine I could use right now.

Thanks Steve. Yes, I was thinking about that. I would very much like to visit there.
Looking at costs, I may end up having to forego this trip for a later date and do something closer to home this time around. We'll see. I haven't determined entirely yet.
