Hello all, I am getting back into backpacking after a 38 year hiatus. Thinking this is something I would like to spend some of my upcoming copious free time doing, partial retirement in 3 to 4 months. i have spent the last 10 months getting in shape and losing weight and went on my first trip earlier this month with my daughter. We did the Shoup Bay trail in Valdez, AK, 9.5 up and down hill miles and had a great time, stayed at a public use cabin and had an adventure. That was my test trip to see if i still liked backpacking before i invested too much in gear. We will be moving to Ohio this fall so i will be looking for recommendations for Eastern states hikes and will have many other questions i am sure. Will be coming back to Alaska probably 6 weeks a year so i can explore all the places i have been putting off.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement, and welcome to the forums. Sounds like you've got some great adventures ahead of you. Can't help you with that part of the country, but I'm sure we'll have some of our members chime in.

Moving ...to ....Ohio?
Not judging. Not..... judging.
Being born and bred kentucky I might have ..... issues. With Ohio.
Eastern state, Midwest, got ideas. No. 1 buy new gear based on recommendations here. Worth every penny. Then break it in.... doing sections of the AT.
That is all.

Welcome from the Big Sky country (Montana). I have fond memories of some great hikes in Alaska from several summers spent there in the reckless days of my youth. I also have memories of Alaska's mosquitos. They are not so fond.

Welcome kkivie from Michigan. When you get settled and are ready for suggestions I can point you to a few good places. Ohio has somewhat limited backpacking but you'll be close enough to KY, PA, TN, MI, & WV to find good trails. Join us over at Central(Midwest) for ideas and trip reports.

Yukon starting on Saturday and excitement is running high. Now that is cool! Is there a trail or is it all off trail?

Now that is cool! Is there a trail or is it all off trail? Bit of both, really. We'll be heading to both Kluane and Tombstone. Though our routes are all up in the air right now due to grizzly closures and snow/flooding closures, respectively.
