For a few dollars more..... Yeah, I was thinking about that being just one more barrier for those with limited means. A passport isn't cheap, and the moreso if you aren't equipped to take your own photos and have to pay for that as well.

Well there is pre-check. Oregon is talking about making a qualified ID available at an additional cost ($20??)
I imagine most states will work something out, though I don't think the congress is in session anymore (in Oregon). Anyway make sure by clicking on your state, etc. before you fly.

I kind of freaked out on seeing this because I fly home from D.C. On July 11, but even though I fly into Oregon, on closer inspection, our CA Drivers License has three months longer than Oregon does in the extension list. I let my passport expire because the law here says in Custody hearings that the parties and child can't do the passport application thing during the mediations

My state is in compliance. I have a passport, so it doesn't matter to me. I agree with RS about flying, I just don't like it. It's boring and cramped. I feel sorry for larger people.

The good news is that with the new US ICE systems, they don't stamp your passport every time you enter the country. Last passport I had to pay to get extra pages added, as it was full up of stamps. This one looks like it will last me through the expiration date, despite the fact that I've "used" it more...

I had thought that CA met the requirements, given that the paperwork is pretty extensive. But I see that our insistence on having drivers pass tests and be licensed regardless of legal status disqualifies the CA license. Happily, we all have passports, because I doubt CA will change that rule anytime soon; we don't need that many unlicensed drivers on our roads.
I can't say I much like flying either, but though I'm a good swimmer, I don't think that's an option for getting to, say, New Zealand. And I do NOT want my kid driving back and forth to Colorado at Thanksgiving and Xmas, so he'll definitely keep flying.

I figure a lot of the deadlines will be extended again. NJ, for example was one of the first states to move toward Real ID, but still isn't considered adequate. They changed licenses this year to be fully compliant, only to be found lacking yet again, mostly in ways that have little importance. I just renewed two weeks ago, but I'll have to update again next year if I don't want to also carry a passport for the next four years. "Among the changes that drivers would see is that driver's licenses and ID cards will show a persons full first name, instead of the nine characters displayed now, MVC officials said. Drivers would be photographed at the beginning of the licensing process instead of toward the end to meet a federal requirement." www.nj.com/traffic/index.ssf/2017/05/why_theres_a_chance_nj_licenses_wont_work_as_id_at_airports_this_fall.htmlThis makes sense for people with first names longer than nine characters, but it shouldn't disqualify everyone else. Also, disqualifying over a three minute difference in when they take the picture is absurd. In NJ, they don't take the picture until after your SSN is verified.

Tennessee used to give drivers license to anyone regardless of immigration status. I think that it was changed though. I am not sure.

Also, disqualifying over a three minute difference in when they take the picture is absurd. In NJ, they don't take the picture until after your SSN is verified. Yeah, seems like a totally absurd issue. Actually, CA may lose on that one, too. IIRC, the photo was the last step when Second Son got his license last winter.

Honestly, I live in a crap state for ID (Washington). I got a passport card 7 years ago, and I only use it for ID when flying. I breeze right through TSA with it. And I use it for driving to Canada. I don't have to haul my actual passport which is good.
And heck, my passport photo is way hotter than my drivers license. ;-)
