Also consider resale value: I would like to have gotten a 2BR house, but nobody builds them around here because there's no market for them. This. Much easier to sell a 3Bdrm/2bath house just about anywhere in the country. So, cajun, no more walks on the levee out the back door?

I bought my first and only house in 1993. It was built in 1946.2bdrm,2bath,1/4 acre in town.
I chose the location to be within biking distance of downtown and campus. Wasn't too worried about the neighbors. I get along with most people.
My best advice. Use the VA loan if you're able. Lower rates, no down payment, free inspection, etc. I hocked my house to settle money issues after my last divorce. The mortgage is still under $1000 a month. I'll live there till I die. If I live that long.
