Planning only a short hike on a sunny afternoon while in town visiting family, the 23-year-old from River Forest set off along the trail May 4 without food or water, with only her dog Mogi at her side. A couple of hours later, after stopping to swim, she got turned around and hiked deeper into the wilderness in search of a way out.
The nature enthusiast wasn't a novice.
Am I the only one that finds these two statements contradictory?

I got lost in New York City once. I survived on pizza and beer.

"Planning only a short hike" and Zap I knew it was another in a long line of dayhikers who needed to be rescued. Why? Because they just don't carry the gear needed to spend the night in case of emergency. Why don't dayhikers carry a bivy and a sleeping bag or a tarp? Dangit if I know.

I followed this story locally in Chicago since she was from here - and initially the reports said she set out on an overnight hike. It was interesting to read the comments when she was missing - all along the lines of: "Why would you hike overnight" or "she should not hike alone where there are bears, etc." While we here think our hobby is pretty swell, the general public has no idea what it even is!
I also got a kick out of her experience including "camping at Starved Rock State Park" - it's a place so crowded I won't even go there anymore, and I don't believe there is backcountry hiking, so she basically camped at a crowded state park campground. (I'm not dissing her for it, it's the reporting)
Anyways, glad she was found.

Camping at Starved Rock is certainly an adventure. i am certainly glad she survived, but it sounds like she made some rookie mistakes.

Camping at Starved Rock is certainly an adventure. My friend's husband wouldn't let her camp there with me because "that's where the Chicago gang-bangers go to get away from the city" lol
