I'd long forgotten that I made campground reservations back in November for Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. We usually go up every Memorial Day Weekend. But all the kids are in college now and have summer jobs and other conflicts and I was thinking that I'm also too busy to go this year.... but, thinking about it now, I think I'm going to take my dog and go up for the weekend.

Monday is a day set aside to remember those who paid the ultimate price to let us enjoy camping and spending time with family.
Let us not forget the reason for the day.

My youngest is graduating from high school on Saturday. More sweet than bitter (Isn't that a song?). He's got a good head on his shoulders, and a good foundation for his life. It will be strange without him around this fall. This could be pretty much my post, except the graduation is tonight. I'm hoping to spend some of the weekend recovering from a very long week. But I'd say the same things about my kid.

Big moon tides and lots of striped bass to toss flies at. Camping at the mouth of the Merrimack River in Massachusetts. Lots of hiking through the Spartina grass and over the sand will be done. This Memorial Day falls on my Father's birthday. As he lay in his bed dying six years ago, I noticed a horrible scar in his side. I asked my Mother about it and she said " he never told you about getting bayonetted?" I knew about three bullet wounds from second hand information, but missed that one. He survived getting shot and hand to hand combat and NEVER, NEVER said a word about it. He was as heroic and humble a man as they come. To his incomparable, amazing generation that fought in WW2, and the the many that never made it home serving our country in all our wars, you have my heartfelt gratitude.

No big plans. Always seems like a good weekend to stay home and avoid the crowds. If the weather's decent, and it's supposed to be, I'll probably ride my bike out to visit my father's grave in a veteran's cemetery about 15 miles away, have some lunch and then ride home. Regardless, I'll head to his resting place for a bit. He was a good man who served his country as an army medic in WW II although he never talked much about it. Whether that was out of modesty or because of what he experienced, I'm not sure. Probably a combination of both.

Our holiday weekend was last weekend. I stayed in and cleaned, finished a book, ran errands, treated the cats for fleas, exercised my inner gourmet, etc. I'm not a fan of camping on the spring/summer long weekends; there are limited 'nearby' options (read: half-day's drive) in this part of the province in addition to the country's largest population center.
This weekend I'll probably get out and about on a day-hike with my new lens on Saturday, then I have a convention on Sunday.

Car camping with a big group, boating and day hiking. High School Rodeo finals and school graduations with adopted family. Thanking the men and women that lost friends and family for their sacrifice as well as remembering some of my own fallen family. Overall, enjoying as much as I can in the time God has given me to push down on the earth rather than pushing up wild flowers. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe weekend.

Making a first time trip to Death Valley. Probably just car camping with a chance of backpacking in the higher elevations. Possibly stopping by REI along the way to get a new sleeping bag and tent while the sales on (particularly since I'm strongly considering PCT next year).

Rehab visit duty again; a recent fall is the cause. I'll probably spend Memorial Day at rehab with my father so he's not alone on that special day. I'm working on creating a Memorial Day bouquet of artificial flowers in red, white and blue of course. Hopefully I can find the little flag that I keep moving around from place to place until I can find a permanent site for it; it'll be added to the bouquet.
I'll also deliver several cards to open up on days when I don't visit; that way he has something new, something to remind him how much he's loved and appreciated.
Hopefully the weather will be nice enough that I can get some seeds sown inbetween rehab visits; I'm way behind already. Then I'll rest and relax at the rehab center, indulging in their delicious free coffee.

Hiking on Saturday, family on Sunday, Memorial Day parade Monday morning and probably a hike later in the day. Thank you to all of you (and your family members) who served our country so that I can do those things. I truly appreciate your service and sacrifice.

As a recent retiree dates I do things have turned up-side-down. Holidays and weekends are now days to stay home while midweek days are days to start trips out to the Sierra Nevada and other distant destinations. It is 6:40pm Friday now and one can be certain all freeways leading out of our San Francisco Bay Area are clogged full of myriad 8-5 m-f folks driving out to zoos. Instead today, I got up at sunrise, checked the weather forecast, went to the meetup dot com site and decided to join a local hiking group's hike today. So did a 7.1 miles 1300 foot uphill hike in our redwood forests. Got back before the commute at 3pm and am now eating ice cream (thanks hikerjer).
