Wow. Big mess there.
Eventually that entire coast will fall in.

Drove the entire length of the PCH from LA to San Francisco in 2002 on a road trip. Might be a while before that scenic ride is available again.

Eventually that entire coast will fall in. That is exactly true. It's a constantly eroding coastline, and we have tried to preserve it at one exact moment. Doomed to failure.

I drove it with a friend from Oceanside up to where it connects to 101 and on to Eureka in 1971 camping and cooking out every single night. We took our time, never going more than around 50 miles a day. At the Big Sur ranger station we drove around 2 miles north of there, found a faint dirt double track heading westerly, zigging and zagging down to a carved out spot in the side of the slopes just above the Pacific. We parked and camped right there for three days and nights only seeing one small group of three folks the whole time. There was a path that led down to the ocean where fantastic tide pools with star fish, etc awaited us. Then we drove up into Canada for the rest of the summer. I doubt dispersed camping like that is even available anymore. Probably fenced off or fell into the ocean long ago...

I said we drove "from LA to San Francisco", but we actually drove west from Austin, mostly through alternative routes, took I8 and I10 from Las Cruces to San Diego (not a great decision, in hindsight - I wanted to go further north like I did back in '75, driving through the mountains along 2 lane blacktop, but the wife sorta "nixed" that), then the PCH from San Diego up to San Francisco.
I think we made about a half dozen stops along the westerly route - mostly "overnight hotel stops, with minimal touring/shopping", then about the same on the northerly direction, spending a couple of days in San Diego with a lot of visits and dayhiking, a night and day in San Clemente, a night and day in Santa Barbara with visits to beaches and hiking, a day at Pismo Beach and a day at Morro Bay (on a friend's recommendation - I didn't much care for it, but the wife loved it: lots of high winds and high wind surf, plus tons and tons of bird poo), plus a day around Big Sur and Monterrey, "doing the tour".
Finally, we spent two weeks in San Francisco and the surrounding area before "fleeing home" east. I tried to convince the wife and daughter to "stop off" at Yosemite, but I was cancelled. They were "road tired" and wanted to go home. I could have driven to Canada and back - the long way. Now, both the wife and I see the "missed opportunity" of visiting Yosemite as sad, but so it goes.
No "camping" and minimal dayhiking in the woods, though I had optimistically taken my hiking guides - we did do multiple dayhikes in and around San Francisco, including Muir Woods and Point Reyes (on successive days). Most of our "hiking" was urban - there's a hell of a lot to see in San Francisco. I need to plan another trip. In fact, long, long ago, I always dreamed of driving up the coast on a motorcycle. I think something intervened with that. Oh, that's right: a divorce! How soon one forgets!

A bridge has been out for months, so this just piles on. Could give this beautiful coastline a well-deserved rest though. Maybe give the forest service and state an idea to make more backpacker-friendly "thru" facilities as long range hikers wouldn't be stymied by lack of road.

I saw on youtube it was caused by a UFO crashing into the mountainside and the government is covering it up.
If it is on youtube it must be true!

Get your provocateurs correct ! I've driven from LA to Carmel on Hwy 1 probably 5-6 times. Every time I do, I have to have this blasting on the 8 track/ cassette/CD/MP3. RIP Hwy 1

The amount of earth material involved in that slide boggles my mind. It's enormous.

We camped at Kirk Creek at the otter refuge (saw sea elephants and otters) last month. It's about 8 miles south of the slide. We had to come across the Los Padres as the road was closed at Carmel. The hairy road through the forest had slides all over it, and I could see that one experiencing something similar. The road work people were going back and forth over it. They may just give up.

We drove it in 2014 (LA to SF) and it was absolutely beautiful. I am sad to see it closed but like others have said, it will all be in the ocean eventually.
