Just curious. How many of you have had your vehicle broken into while you were hiking and it was parked at the trailhead. Glad to say I've never experienced it but then I don't live or hike in areas near high population centers.

In the 70s I had my vehicle broken into doing a dayhike just north of the Smokies along the Appalachian Trail. It was a very rural area near where the Standing Bear hostel is today but of course the National Park area does attract it's fair share of vehicle vandalism. We had been camping along the Blue Ridge Parkway so I had left my sleeping bag in view in the backseat for the dayhike.I wrote it off to rookie error and since then have never left anything in view in the vehicle and have never had another smashed window or vandalism.

Not mine, but I was at a redwood to beach trail with a friend and we locked her car. she had the windows smashed out and the car stereo stolen. Since then I tend to leave the vehicle unlocked and nothing in it that I value.

Never at a backcountry trailhead. I have been broken into I think twice in urban settings, and once at an openspace TH near Boulder. I'm actually amazed we haven't been, as we tend to do backpacks in the middle of long car trips, and leave our car loaded with stuff, and often with a bike or two on the roof (locking in, but still!).

"Knock on wood", so far no vehicular B&E's.

So far never. Though it is something that I think about when I'm out for several days.

Never had one broken in to. But, I did have my 'vette vandalized at a trail head. I'm pretty sure it was done by the land owner the parking area was at. He was a beekeeper and even though it was cleared to park there, he wasn't happy about it. My tail lights were smashed out of my 'vette. Chevette, that is.

Once at North Lake, Ca trailhead, came back from a week out and discovered someone took the rear window and window gasket from my Jeep Cherokee...nothing else taken - just the entire rear window. I was parked downtown once when I had my Jeepster Commando hard top. One of the windows were pushed in and laying on the back seat with a 5 dollar bill on top.

Twice, both times parked at trailheads in the Red River Gorge, KY.

Family was downtown SF in 'rough' hiking clothes. I gave my, then 6yo, my hat to hold for me while I took off a pull over sweater and stuffed it in a day pack.
(We) collected two dollars in less than 5 mins.
Never been vandalized but had a tree limb total my car at the trail head parking. I know of nobody personally who has had trail head parking problems - or that I remember. I have $0 deductible for comprehensive on my cars. That has saved a lot of money over the years. Two deer at different times, a large jack wabit at 80+mph, the tree limb, a lead tire balancing weight that took out the A/C condenser (dang! expensive). Windshield replacement when a large nut fell off a truck I was following. I saw it bounce twice and got me right between the eyes - well - without the wind shield there. It has also been used to take out dings and minor dents, scratches and pits. Vandalism would be covered by comprehensive, theft by other insurance.
I was told that car jackers usually check under the right front tire for a key...wait, the left one.

Once, on an overnight at a popular trailhead right off the freeway in Oregon. They punched out the lock, took a couple things from the glove box and back seat, nothing terribly valuable. Insurance fixed it, hasn't stopped me since. C'est la vie. They did far worse to a few of the other vehicles in that lot, breaking out the windows and cutting the break lines, etc.
