I'm a novice backpacker from Ohio. I have the typical backpacking novice gear. A huge tent. Over packing and couldn't start a fire without a fire starter. But I have a daughter who just turned 5. I'm determined to get out and have fun in the outdoors with her.
My gear:
Tent: REI Co-op Half Dome 4 Tent
Bag: Baltoro 75
Sleeping bag: Western Mountaineering Caribou MF 35 Degree Sleeping Bag
Pad: Klymit Static V Luxe Sleeping Pad, Grey and Therm-A-Rest Neo Air Trekker Air Mattress
Chair: helix one. I love that chair so much I use it at home.
Various other small items but those are the big ones.

We all started out there! Glad to have you aboard, and hope we can be of assistance to you. Good on you for your determination to share the outdoors with your daughter.

You'd laugh if I told you the content of my pack on my very first trip so like trinity said... We all started there. And I still use a fire starter to start my fires (a bic).

Greetings from the pacific northwest!
All of my favorite memories as a child are of hiking with my parents. Playing in the woods, poking at slugs, collecting berries, hopping across streams and making leaf boats...I dont remember the times I was freezing or bug bitten or hiking in the dark (my mother keeps asking lol).
Your daughter is going to love it! And so will you.

I second the Bic. Welcome, it's a fun learning adventure. I started with an umbrella, a wool blanket, a kerosene lantern, a cast iron frying pan, and canned goods for most of my food. I can now comfortably do an overnighter with the weight of a few cans and any one of the above items.

Welcome. 30 years ago my pack was ridiculous and my gear selection was almost comical...but I got outside. The former doesn't matter so much but the latter, getting outside, does.
Glad you are on the trail. Your child will benefit from it.
I hope we can be of some help.

Howdy!
You and your daughter will have some terrific memories.
Maybe I "could" start a fire without a fire starter, but why? I always carry a few cotton balls soaked in Vaseline.
You can get a 7x7 tent that weights 6 lbs at Walmart for $25. It will hold you, your daughter and all of your gear. Pick a tube of seam sealer while you're there.
Get a small kids backpack for her. She can carry her own snacks, clothes, and her favorite stuffed animal or doll. You get to carry the heavy stuff for another year or two.

She can carry her own snacks, clothes, and her favorite stuffed animal or doll Add in at least a little water, and she's safer, too. Get her a whistle and teach her when to use it (only when lost!). BTW, I solved the fire-starting problem: I mostly don't build them. Usually they aren't legal where I'm hiking. I do carry a couple of Bics and matches, but have pretty much stopped carrying the "fire starter" materials.

My current tent is a 4 person. It weighs about 7lbs. Takes me about 10 minutes to set it up alone. Our first night using it was during a downpour. The ground was so slippery she couldn't walk. So I had to carry her, my pack and her pack. But we only had a little over a mile of walking. Slipped down on hill and learned the value of a good pack. The pack not only broke my fall but acted as a slide.
The next morning a park ranger came to check on us. Said everyone else either cancelled or needed assistant leaving during the night. He was surprised my tent held up as well as it did.
The other trips were much eaiser. But we actually enjoyed the first night despite all the problems.
She has her own pack. Light, and a whistle. Only thing in it is a toy and her sleeping bag.

Updated my gear. Just got back from the eye doctor. I can finally see enough to use my pc.
