Some type of accident, though reports are not clear. 40 years young.
it seems that so many of the world's elite mountaineers do not live to see retirement.
RIP

At least he didn't have children.
The possibility to live out one's natural life with a lifetime of mountaineering at Steck's level is 50%

RIP, Uli. Another remarkable adventurer is this Russian: LINKHe's solo trekked to BOTH poles, solo rowed across the Atlantic AND Pacific, climbed Everest twice, set the solo round the world balloon flight record, is the only person to ever solo circumnavigate the south pole, completed the Iditarod dog sled race, dog sledded across the Greenland ice cap, and has completed the 7 Summits Challenge, among many other feats. And oh yeah, he's an ordained Priest in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a world recognized painter/sculptor. Quite the character.

RIP. Reading the articles surrounding his death, most mentioned the fast and light approach to climbing is more dangerous than more equipment-centered approaches.

Reminds me of an old aviation saying:
"There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots."
