More recent research is also showing what kind of resistance exercise is better as we age.
Muscle loss occurs as a natural aging process. But the research is showing you lose Type II muscles (fast twitch) more than Type I (slow twitch). So if you lift weights, incorporate a power lifting routine into your workout cycle to help maintain your Type II muscle cells.
Maintaining functional independence in later years (80s-90s) is associated with T2 cells more than T1.

I have a (new) gym friend--age 40, played football (wide receiver) at Purdue, then 4 years at Arizona (NFL), and another 6 of arena ball (Columbus). Ran 4.37 at the draft combine. He's now 40, and he's basically never lifted weights. Receivers were not permitted to do leg weight training. All they did was run sprints. He still does it--basically intervals of sprinting to full speed (takes him about 3-4 seconds any maybe 30 yards), stopping, resting, rinse repeat. He swears by it.

I've put 18,000 miles on the bike in 15 years since purchased. A bike exercises heart, lungs and legs. Theses are also heavily used when backpacking. I never got into the jogging/running trend. That type of high impact activity can lead to knee, ankle or hip problems later on in life. At 62 I've never visited a chiropractor. I can still carry 40 pounds 12 miles a day over varied terrain at high altitudes without issues.
Keep moving and you'll stay healthy.

Flexibility exercises along with moderate upper body weight training seems to do it for me...along with keeping on pickin' 'em up and puttin' 'em down!

Of course we backpack...That's why we're here, right? But not often enough to keep us in shape. We also hike/walk around town, about five hours a week?
And I'll see your 18,000 miles and raise you. In the last fifteen years I've put 65,000 miles on my road bike. And I ride hard--17 mph.
But I also think it's important to do other stuff. Just getting down on the ground to do some sit ups and push ups is good for you--both the exercises and the mobility.
As we get older we spend too much time in static positions, sitting g, standing, or lying down. We forget how to fall, and we forget how to get up again!

I like to go surfing! Too bad my capabilities aren't nearly what they were 25 years ago, but it's still a great way to get exercise. For the third consecutive Monday, yesterday I spent about two hours paddling, catching waves, diving under waves while trying to hold onto my board. Holding my breath while getting spun and tumbled under water. Also walked maybe a mile in heavy, wet sand. That's some gymnasium for me.

Seems like a great workout--lots explosive movements (popping up), core work, and some endurance work. I am sure a few hours of surfing leaves you pleasantly gassed. I do a weekly workout in the pool with a flippers and a board, motoring through a mile in about 33 minutes. I have found that it really strengthens the core without too much strain on the joints.

Repeating the basics is a good idea because we must remember that neophytes and folks seeking information will visit these forums. And I'll see your 18,000 miles and raise you. In the last fifteen years I've put 65,000 miles on my road bike. And I ride hard--17 mph. I've been riding a bike in this town for 37 years. I'm pretty sure my life time mileage would rival yours. I also ride "full tilt boogie" and always have. I use to ride rode bikes like Cannondale. But, I switched to a Fuji Touring (current bike) in 2002 when I was hit by a driver on the Cannondale. Though not as light or quick as road/race bikes (skinny tire bikes) the longer frame and slightly bigger tires (700x32) are better suited for the in-town commutes I do.

Running works well for me. My knees are in much better shape in my 50's than they were in my 30's. As you get older I think you still need to go hard.

As you get older I think you still need to go hard. Yes. Just accept that full-tilt may not be quite as zippy as it was when you were 25. I still do interval training (see article in the OP), though I'm more inclined to go for distance than speed these days. OTOH: I was always better at distance than speed. When I was a runner, the longer the race, the better I did.

Since my knees degraded, I moved interval training from the track to the elliptical trainer for bad weather. However, when it's not too icy, I hike a steep hill repeat course. It's a roughly half-mile loop that rises 200 feet in 250 yards and descends more gradually. I can get my heart rate as high as I want with a fast walk. (I average about 4.2 mph without a pack, and my max heart rate is still up at 181).

If I could trade in any body part for a new one, it would be my knees. I can live with the wear and tear in the shoulders (torn labrum and cuff), the balky back, and the patellar-femoral issues, but with new knees I'd resume the sprint workouts, stair running (the football stadium at Santa Barbara City College is the best place on the planet to do this), and plyometric stuff. Just no more 600 lb leg presses that got me to this point in the first place.
I am still hoping that PRP and stem cell therapy will be mainstream soon enough for worn joints.
