After years(decades) away from backpacking, I am getting back into the swing of things. I have been a very active day hiker but for many reasons, the camping component has not been included. NO MORE, I am jumping back in with both feet.
Really enjoying researching and upgrading my old gear; a Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 40-60 was delivered to me just this week!
I hope to start making it out on a few close to home overnights to get back into the swing of things. Any good Bay Area suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome back. It took you that long to forget how painful it is, eh? I'm glad I have a short memory...

Welcome to the forum from Northern California. Like you, I have just recently gotten back to backpacking from day hiking. You've found the right place...one full of great info and a group of folks who don't take much seriously!

Welcome from another denizen of the Bay Area (assuming you mean SF Bay). Good places for warm-up overnights are Pt. Reyes (my favorite, and you can actually extend that to multiple days); Big Basin has a trail camp as does Butano State Park. Those are all parks with designated sites. Henry Coe has both some designated sites and available back-country dispersed camping (I haven't yet gone and done that). Oh, and Castle Rock St. Park has a trail camp, too. I'm pretty sure there are other areas to the north, in Sonoma County, but maybe someone more familiar with that area can offer suggestions.

How many gigawatts can you carry in that Flex Capacitor? It's a capacitor. I believe that the proper units will be microfarads, or thereabouts. Anywho. kirby - welcome to the pleasure dome.

Sonoma County: Austin Creek State Recreation Area right next to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve has two designated "remote" campsites for backpackers. Quite a few hiking trails there too. Hood Mountain Regional Park has a designated area for backpack camping and it is right alongside Sugarloaf Ridge State Park which offers a large selection of hiking trails in the miles category.
Sonoma Coast State Park...Willow Creek Campsite
These are all great places to take a test drive and see some beautiful north bay countryside. That is...test drive with your new gear!
