I thought that was an okay survey. I can see that it's aimed at Sweden, where I've not particularly thought of going, but I was able to answer most questions. The exception was #9, about impact. It seems to me that tourism in a place like Sweden is very different from the only international backpacking I've done, in Peru (and that was so well supported I didn't actually count it as backpacking). There, I feel like the backpackers have a very large impact on the culture and environment in the popular areas. I don't know about it in a place like Sweden. I really wanted to answer that question with either a more nuanced answer or just a "I have no idea."

hello Rebeccad, thank you, i'd ask more questions but people loose their patience pretty fast:)) and that is exactly why i aimed it at Sweden, i did some research and i found out that their backpacker numbers are really low compared to Europe, who doesn't really have research done on the matter, compared with the US who had 44 mil in 2016, compared with ... and i know Sweden's wilderness is one big campground and people are welcoming, so i want to know why. I know!!! I did the Inca Trail in July and they have so many offers for backpackers and tour guides that everything is practically done for you, but i still consider it backpacking because i had my things with me. you should try Europe too, we have really great stuff here! I agree, every stranger that comes in contact with another culture does, that's the effect of globalization, but traditional backpackers(observers) tend not to meddle with a culture, they experience it and i see them as less damaging to a culture than, lets say mass tourism where people just don't respect another culture and leave tons of trash behind them and they know nothing about the place they are visiting. Sweden really has the infrastructure for backpackers but they don't really get that many, i'm thinking it's because they don't promote it. thank you

"My main focus is to see what backpackers want and if what the current industry has to offer fulfills those needs...This research applies to all backpackers world-wide and of all ages... i still consider it backpacking because I had my things with me."
Respectfully, in spite of your insistence, (BTW, filled the survey out and), no it doesn't. The majority of your questions have only a peripheral connection as to what our type of backpackers (here) "want" or need...sorry. Maybe do your homework and not confuse the differences....(BTW, always a first post too - graduate class work?...wonder what class?) Hopefully, this poll fulfills your research questionnaire assignment. So Kudos there! If your professor reads this:
Again, just another in the long line of misplaced student polls that all too often wind up being posted here. Unfortunately, once again, you somehow missed the subtle nuances of our sport. However, keep them coming as these type polls always provide ample amusement for this forum... a welcome comic distraction.

For most of us at this site, I think the emphasis is on backpacking, not travel. Personally, If I visited Sweden, it would be for the cultural and tourist aspect, not backpacking. I can backpack in my back yard, I don't need to travel half way around the world to do so.
For me at least, backpacking is a relatively inexpensive sport. Most trips take less than a tank of gas. I prepare my own food. Lodging, entrance fees and airfare are nil.

Europe, who doesn't really have research done on the matter,
Based on the number of misguided surveys that have been posted here over the last 20 years, I would think that someone has ample research on European style "backpacking".
From the survey page -- "Hello, my name is Sandra Bahmat and I am a final year student at American Hotel Academy."

From the survey page -- "Hello, my name is Sandra Bahmat and I am a final year student at American Hotel Academy." Well, that puts it all in perspective, doesn't it? I figured there was a commercial interest somewhere.

steg bort från bong och acceptera detta inte var lämplig målgrupp för din undersökning. Vi är äldre och återigen, det är inte om kultur, det handlar om vildhet.
I don't speak Swedish but i can pretend to on the internet.

I answered from my knowledge and wants as an urban backpacker, not a backcountry backpacker. Hope it helps.

I would love to visit Sweden someday; two of my great-grandparents emigrated from there, and it would be great to see the "old country".
I would probably do the tourist/hostel/culture backpacker thing rather than wilderness travel, though.

Though I didn't do the survey,I think it is on topic given we now have an international forum geared toward "world travel". However you may get a more targeted response in that sub-forum without being policed by the crusty regionalists in this one. The nordic countries are high on my list of places to explore as is Romania after a backpacking report by one of the forum members last fall here . It looks like you are located in an exceptional gateway location for trekking.I prefer to travel by bicycle, staching the bike when I wish to explore a wilderness area. The best of all worlds, imo...

I would probably do the tourist/hostel/culture backpacker thing rather than wilderness travel, though. This brings up something--most of us when doing international travel do at least some mix of more traditional tourism with any backcountry travel. Heck, even when we traveled to Peru for the primary purpose of trekking, we spent some time in hotels, needed in-country transport, and visited some cultural sites. I think for me that goes triple for Europe. I want to explore the mountains there, but I would be unlikely to fly in and just backpack in the wilderness then fly back out.
