Welcome and all that! Another Northern Californian here. Young families have a way of interfering with long bps. Once the kids are about 4-5, then you can really begin to train them for the day they carry your load. When they are 18, they no longer want to hang with the parents, but they'll be back after 30. Gotta say Zeke has our experience pretty well pegged. The first summer, when it was one baby (our first was born at the end of Oct., so about the same time-line), we were able to do some 1 and 2 night pack trips with me carrying the baby and anything else we could strap onto that pack, and the spouse carrying everything else. The next summer, we had 2 kids, and for the next 3 or 4 years, we stuck to packer-assisted base camps. Then when they were 4 & 5, we went back on the trail, with two seriously overloaded parents and the kids carrying adorable little packs that held very little In the last couple of years, as they are now 19 and almost 18, we've had less enthusiasm for our company (not so much a lack of interest in backpacking, but when only one of them is free, they are less interested in going with us). I'm hoping Zeke is right in his prediction for the future! All of which wandered a bit from my welcome to you, but glad to have you, and I'll invite you to seek and share tales and advice in the "Backpacking with Kids" section.

Thanks for the info zeke and rebeccad I figured we'd be carrying the load on any hikes for quite some time. No problem here. I would rather carry the load and have my little guy outside that stuck inside

Awesome! I actually just joined today, myself! I live in southern California now, but I am actually from Anniston Alabama! Are you near Anniston?

Ahhh just curious. Anniston claims to be "northeast" Alabama. But your really are North! Anyway, welcome, and enjoy the trails!
