I subscribed to backpacker for almost 10 years. Then I had a terrible experience with their subscription services dept (or lack thereof) and decided I'd never subscribe again. I occasionally still buy an issue in the airport.

I don't have any magazine subscriptions. In fact, I don't do much reading for pleasure. I read all day at work, and I'm burned out by the time I get home.
But if I did, I'd rather read paper than a screen.

Every time I glance at a Backpacker cover, it seems to promise "your best trip ever" and "top trails for backcountry solitude." In other words, the same stuff, over and over again.

I wish they just kept to the minimalist appearance they started with. This is Volume 1, Issue 1 (Spring, 1973) Interest in backpacking was exploding every year in that era.

Backpacker is the only "outside" magazine I subscribe too, unless you count Astronomy and Trains which both occur outside and New Mexico which usually has at least one "outside" article in it per month.

There is actually some pretty good reporting that comes from Outside magazine (scattered amidst the commercial spam and other superficial consumeristic stuff). It's prolly worth a subscription, though it is just too easy to get it online. They should put the good stuff behind a paywall.
