I don't listen mostly because I have a commitment on Sunday mornings at the same time. Chris Thile is a Grammy award winning musician who started with the bluegrass band Nickel Creek. He has done solo work and also played with the Punch Brothers. He was, basically, a child prodigy on the mandolin and has carried on the acoustic tradition. I couldn't think of a better host for Prairie Home Companion. Check out his Wikipedia page.

Mammoth Lakes & Tuolumne Meadows...living the dream

Powder Milk Biscuits...thanks for the flashback! Living in Tuolumne Meadows, back in the employee tents of Club Med, only one radio station comes through the mountains - The Hawk - out of Modesto. Late Saturday nights, (when static allowed listening), right after Dan Aykroyd's "Blues Brothers" hour (killer BTW)...also after Sundays Sammy Hagar's "I'll play whatever I Want" hour (Worthwhile too!)...they were promo-ing the new Prairie Home Companion show. Always wanted to stay up...never made it. Thanks for posting.

I listened to PHC religiously back around 1985-1988 or so, less frequently after that. That was the era when I was first getting launched into my work life.
As GK aged, his sense of humor became more caustic and I enjoyed his program less and less.
The musicians that played PHC back then were among the best, at least they were very much to my taste. I haven't listened to it in years, though.

Two big improvements over Keillor's version:
Chris's Thile is not only a superb musician, but he can actually sing.
And a comedian segment.
Yeah, I miss Lake Wobegon. But I like the new show.

I tune in occasionally. The music is generally better now (not always to my taste, but better--partly of course because Chris Thile can sing, as noted above). I always liked the drama bits best, and of course Lake Woebegone. At first it seemed like those dramas were going to be rare, but I think they are putting more of them in, and the Radio Acting Company is still good, with or without GK.

I haven't listened to PHC for several years now, primarily because my work schedule has changed somewhat. Back in the late 90's early 2000's I never missed a show and often re listened to it again on Sunday morning. My wife and I got to see it live on one of the traveling shows in Loveland. They sold out all 6,500 seats in 15 minutes.

I started listening in the mid 1980's. I identified closely with the show as all my "people" are from small Minnesota farming towns. Heck, my mom and dad met at St. Olaf! But I felt the show had lost its way in the last 7 or 8 years. Garrison Keillor didn't as much "sing" as he "croaked."
I've got mixed feelings about the current state of the show. Chris Thile, while certainly talented and intelligent, doesn't have a comfortable "radio voice" and his music selections leave a lot to be desired. I listen occasionally, but it's not something I intentionally tune into like the old show. But then, I'm likely not the target audience anymore either...

O.M.G.
I'm afraid this shows how little I actually "get around". I had no idea that Chris Thile was now hosting PHC. I enjoyed the Garrison Keillor shows, though only on a now-and-again basis, whenever I happened to be around a radio, which means mostly in the car, of course.
But Chris Thile - I'm raving stark crazy about Chris Thile. I have been listening to Nickel Creek and the Punch Brothers for ages now - have almost all of their records, and probably a lot of Chris Thile's stuff right up until I started listening to music on Spotify. In fact, I had a bout of "banjo madness" about 3 weeks ago and put everything I could find of Alison Brown, Abigail Washburn, Noam Pikelny (a Punch Brother), Steve Martin - and even my old recordings of John Hartford - on my playlist for listening as I walked every day.
To be honest, virtually everything that you can hear on radio is now on podcasts, and that is usually the way I listen to "radio programs", whenever I do listen. (I just added PHC to my podcast subscriptions!)

I LOVE Chris Thile on Prairie Home Companion. I think he's done a lot to freshen it up. He's not fantastic at the story telling, but I really enjoy his musical bits and his guest musician choices. He is a very connected individual and really look forward to listening to he and the show grow.
They have been renewed for two more seasons, so that's good news!

For me, GK was PHC. It is impossible to replace him. But I think Thile is doing a fine job and I listen every chance i get.
