Feel free to post your trip reports anywhere you like. TR, Story Telling, or Regional sections. Right. The only thing that would be different about this would be us moving the report when it's disappearing. The idea of having the Storytelling forum was that trip reports were getting bumped to the bottom so fast here. I do think that one thing people are not considering is that not everyone who reads a report feels compelled to comment. (To those who just read, from the perspective of the author, a comment or a "like" is an encouragement; a comment of course pulls the thread back to the top of the list).

I do think that one thing people are not considering is that not everyone who reads a report feels compelled to comment. This is true, especially when the reader is not from the area of the report. My trip report on the Superstitions generated more comments than I thought it would but I think that is because a number of the members here were familiar with the area. That definitely helps. However, I still think the idea has merit. Maybe the OP of the "story" or trip report could keep track themselves when it's dropped off the main screen to have the mods move it to the appropriate area.

Maybe the OP of the "story" or trip report could keep track themselves when it's dropped off the main screen to have the mods move it to the appropriate area. That would be helpful. In fact, anyone who wants could post their TR wherever they want, and any of us would move it if & when asked.

If talking about backpacking related topics bores you then why are you here? Because they were practically begged to return to give this forum critical mass after the previous version died due to neglect. They still basically provide that function similar to how much of the rest of the online media with a liberal base is turning to political drivel to keep itself afloat. So while you or I may not agree with their message or even tactics they do provide a necessary function.

Maybe the OP of the "story" or trip report In fact the author can post in the regional section AND add a simple LINK in a short message in the TR. We don't need to keep track of anything, the trip report stays findable well into the future. Bingo!

I think there's another, broader issue and justification for the TPA. These are turbulent, unsettling times, perhaps more so than other difficult periods in our individual and collective lives. I've read here as well as been told by a few medical professionals that there's been an uptick in visits for depression and stress related issues.
People have their various ways of trying to cope with the stress; sharing concerns with members on a forum of common interests helps do that. For me, I feel better after hashing out troubling issues with friends. Even if problem solving isn't possible at an individual level, at least we can both express our frustrations, then move on to more positive issues.
I think the problems arise when some of the people decide to provoke others, refuse to listen or respond to well stated arguments, and just be contrary (if not an outright troll). Some of these people are like red flag wavers tormenting bulls.

I have yet to see that happen in the TPA. Unless you're talking about people "hashing" it with other people who view things the same way. There is no hashing of anything out unless it's all the name calling and derogatory innuendos.

Coolkat , Perhaps "hashing" wasn't the best choice of words. What I meant was that when I get together with a friend and discuss troubling issues, we both share our concerns, how we're going to deal with them (if there are any solutions), what we can or can't do, then after we've shared our frustrations we move on to more pleasant topics. (This is more effective for caregiving issues than political ones.) Maybe that's just a "woman" thing? I do think there are some good exchanges of ideas on the TPA, but often they're sabotaged by the naysayers, and the innuendoes, a few of which have already appeared just this morning. If you want an example of what I think is a good exchange of ideas, see the comments on the Monsanto thread: bpbasecamp.freeforums.net/thread/5735/monsanto-uh-ohI don't agree with ecocentric and in fact am adamantly opposed to Roundup for any use at all. But I respect his opinion, and I thought his post was well thought out. I didn't respond as I initially intended to b/c I just couldn't articulate my thoughts well enough w/o doing a lot of supporting research, and had other priorities. It is a political issue though. Some of us do get along when we disagree. Others just don't want to; they're instigators.

For what it's worth autumnmist, I think it's probably a bit easier to have a blending of the minds on the environmental thread than in the TPA.

Our trip reports would work here much better if they were first posted in TR and then say after a week or two admins then automatically moved them over to whatever sub-forums where they would not be otherwise scrolled off front pages. We might quibble about some of what is important to this site, but the trip reports are of immediate interest to all and the long term collection of experience is one of the great values this site provides to all. Pew! www.wordwizard.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?p=63421It is not my intention to discourage rational and well informed opinions. It is my intention to deflate the ones that are irrational and poorly informed. I have a safe space to pursue that, and you have a safe space to enjoy the finer things in life. Autumnimst, if you want to get down to the truth, you have to be committed enough to go beyond your feelings. That isn't easy for most of us. We have more to discuss in the "Environment" sub forum.

As long as there's weather, traffic and sports in this world, I'm not going to discuss troubling issues. You have to push that stuff down and let it eat you away from the inside out.
