Running the Amazon is an account of an expedition to kayak the entire Amazon, from its source in the Peruvian Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fascinating adventure story, which is unusually well written. Many adventure books are written by adventurers with little writing experience, this one is written by a journalist who is a rather reluctant adventurer, so this book is much more well written than most. It takes a while to keep track of the different people involved in the journey, but once you learn who they are, this becomes a fascinating account of outdoor adventure, overcoming fear, cultural encounters, group dynamics, and perseverance. Highly recommended, especially for those who enjoy kayaking.

You might also be interested in Walking the Amazon. Some dude walked the same route you describe above. Took nearly 2.5 years.
