Hello, I would like to take my 13-yr-old son on a winter hike and I'm looking for a remote cabin we could stay in, wondering if anyone knows of something like this in New England. I would prefer VT or NH but I wouldn't rule Maine out (and yes, I know there are more states in NE - ) Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks www.merckforest.org/cabins.phpThis is a wonderful place in southern Vt. There's numbers of loop trails and lots others nearby to Rupert, like sections of the AT. The cabins are great and stocked with wood. I disperse camp there regularly, but have looked at all the cabins. If I can be of further help, let me know, but this is a great place. I live about 15 minutes away. I'm glad I do.

A lot depends on (a) your definition of remote [private vs non-private] and (b) what type of accommodations [fireplace vs. no fireplace] you're looking to find. If you're looking for a cabin with a caretaker and a fire, then you will want to look at the AMC Huts in NH: www.outdoors.org/lodging-camping/huts/season-dates.cfm. I've stayed at the Harvard Cabin and my GF has stayed at the Zealand Falls Hut. I would rule out the Harvard Cabin. Zealand might be a better option, but will cost you between $34 and $54 per person per night (non-AMC members). In Vermont, I'm only aware of one cabin with a stove. There are all sorts of "3-season cabins" you could stay in along the Long Trail, but they wouldn't have heat or insulation, so they will be cold. They will also be remote, free of charge, and most likely nobody else will there while you're visiting.
