It's all developing positive lifestyle habits.Going to the gym eventually becomes self-reinforcing.

Yikes. Between the holidays, traveling, family commitments, et al I had almost a full month hiatus from my normal workout routine. Tried to get back into it today and really struggled. I could barely whip out 100 diamond push-ups before collapsing and the arms turned to jelly.
Might take a while to get back where I was. ...Take a break, pay the price... :(

Week beginning Sunday,January,15th- 15th-(pm)chest/light arms,traps,neck,abs 16th-(pm)shoulders/arms/light chest,neck 17th-(pm)legs/light chest,shoulders,traps,arms,neck 18th-rest 19th-(am)back/light chest,arms,legs,traps,neck,abs
-Notes- -My limiting factor now is becoming sleep as the last two nights have not been entirely restful.I am not ever a really sound sleeper but make up for lack of quality by quantity, waking several times and lounging until I can fall back asleep. And,I try not to accumulate sleep deficits while making them up ,asap, if I do.But,now I seem to be having trouble resting those last few hours probably a sign I am starting to push the weight training to the edge of my recovery abilities. But,now that I am fully awake with several cups of coffee, my recent results have been impressive and I will be able to push through the final workout for this training week. -5 day cycle w/0 miles walking and 0 miles cycling.

P90X yoga, a short neighborhood run with my daughter, downhill skiing, a long hilly trail run on single-track mountain bike trails, and a 4-mile trail run w/ obstacles thrown in (pushups, rock carries, log jumps...).
For the second time in my life, I got a compliment on my running "speed". A mountain biker caught up to me, and as I let him pass he said "Man, you're CRUSIN'!!!" My internal high-torque diesel engine still has a little pep!!!

walkswithblackflies ; What is P90X Yoga like? I love practicing Yoga, is P90X going to kill me? :D One fact I know, I will never be complimented on my running speed. LOL . Good job! I completed my 5k training last Friday. I can now run 35 minutes without feeling like I'm going to expel a lung. This is a very good thing. I like my lungs. So today I start upping my distance and time gradually to get to the 5k distance. Did I mention I am slow? Once I get to the 5k distance, I'll begin upping to 10k. I had a friend of mine from back in my Ohio days contact me the other night. He now also lives in CO. He was trying to get me to go on a run with him. I am totally not ready for that. He's of marathon ilk, I'm still not even 5k. When I told him that I'd like to wait until after my 5k was finished he said "a race doesn't prove anything". Maybe not to him, but I'm not trying to prove anything to anybody but me. So, I'm not really sure what the point of our conversation was, but I was feeling pretty pressured. I appreciate he was trying to get me out there, but I think I'm doing a pretty good job right now on my own. I'm sure the day will come when having a running buddy will be helpful, but I'm going at my pace right now and avoiding injury.

I had a couple good, but somewhat snowy mountain bike rides Saturday and Sunday. 10 miles of single track, just over an hour Saturday. 20 miles mixed urban trails and single track Sunday. Monday, 8.3 mile run. About 10:30 per mile. Longish for me. Nothing Tuesday or Wednesday: (

Week beginning Thursday,January,20th- 20th-(am)chest/traps/light arms,legs,neck,abs 21st-(am)shoulders/arms/light chest,traps,neck 22nd-(am)legs/light chest,arms,traps,neck 23rd-(am)back/traps/light chest,arms,neck
-Notes- -I have now trained 14 out of the last 16 days.I am not really taking rest days but as my training,at times, slips later into the subsequent day,I effectively accumulate occasional rest days. -I am training 4 to 5 hour sessions with elaborate total body warmups and ending with heavy compound exercises where my almost recovered shoulder allows(basically, legs and back). So,I am really feeling aerobically fit(or at least not sluggish) even though I have not walked or cycled over those last 16 days. -4 day 4 on cycle w/ 0 miles walking and 0 miles cycling.

I'm really hoping this is some new super-challenging crossfit routine, otherwise good luck on a speedy recovery...

Egads, feel better, @idahowalker ! I had a fairly successful week, last week. Except for the fact that I need a two day recovery from Thursday. Sunday I ran at the dog park, so it wasn't a great run, but I got in 2.75 miles. Still not fast. Tuesday I ran down in Boulder and managed 3.36 miles with a 14:12 average pace. Thursday I ran in Boulder again and managed 4.06 miles with a 14:29 average pace. Thursday was hard and my thighs were really feeling it after. I was a bit sore on Friday and Saturday I had other commitments to tend. I did another run on Sunday at the dog park. 2.94 miles and my pace was only 15:20. Not only was there a terrible head wind for over a mile, but it's really difficult to run with the dogs. lol I'm getting there. I was really excited about my Thursday run. That is the longest I have run, ever.

I had knee surgery last Friday to try and address my "issue". Minor procedure. I was able to go back to my heart rate cardio class on Tuesday yet I did very modified and moderate versions of everything. So ... hopefully as time goes by this will actually have taken care of things and I'll be back to hiking.

he said "a race doesn't prove anything". Maybe not to him, but I'm not trying to prove anything to anybody but me. A race, or event, is just a milestone. It gives you a chance to see the results of your work. Also it gives an "impending event" that sometimes is needed to get you out of the house where it would be easy to stay inside.
