Going to Olympic, Crater Lake, and Mt Rainier next summer and are bringing our dogs. I know there are very few trails in the parks that allow dogs. Any suggestions on hikes outside the parks that are just as good? Or any other ideas? Thanks

A good rule of thumb -- National Parks, no dogs. National Forests, dogs fine.

Bumping this up for any specific recommendations...as well as near North Cascades National Park.
Thanks in advance!

Campfires&Concierges Mt Thielson area, just north of Crater Lake, has some wonderful trails. Just don't go there during hunting season. That area is packed with hunter RVs from late Sept to Nov some time.

I'll ditto on no dogs in Lassen. I see plenty of PCT hikers hitchhiking around the Park with their dog -- leaving the trail at Hwy36, catching rides into Chester, Westwood, then Hwy44 to Old Station picking up the trail again, bypassing the Park entirely (and a really nice section of trail between 36 and the Park boundary). I've given a few rides to hitchhiking dog hikers. I don't know if they claim credit for hiking the whole thing or not.
OT -- I have gone paddling with my dogs on Butte Lake in Lassen. The regs say no dogs on trails, and no dogs in the lake, but nothing about dogs ON the lake in a craft. One of the rangers begrudgingly conceded there technically is no reg against it.

The guide to hiking Mt Rainier included some hikes just outside the park in NF. Probably more crowded now! Tatoosh Widlerness, Rock something, and Glacial View (I think). Mt Baker is NF?
Also Goat Rocks is wonderful.
You could probably hike the westside road (MT Rainier) with a dog on a leash (not sure) it is not open to cars any longer. Not much to see though.

I have been hiking with dogs with packs for over 50 years. It was a big change when leashes were required. Now many National Parks do not allow them on trails. A good reason to avoid National Parks.
National Forests have fewer people and fewer rules.
