Hello, I'm in Des Moines and I'm looking for somewhere to go backpacking, or somewhere where I can hike in and hang a hammock for the night without being right next to an RV if you know what I'm saying. I'm willing to drive but I'd prefer to keep it within 3 hours or less. Thanks!

Yellow River State Forest is the one place I hear of in Iowa - a bit over 3 hours from Des Moines, though.

The Woodburn Unit of Stephens State Forest is less than an hour south of Des Moines and has several backcountry campsites.

If you have a kayak/canoe. Lake Red Rock has some paddle in sites. Ledges St Park has a few walk in sites as well (not really backpacking), but a bit more secluded.

Preparation Canyon SP? I think that would be in your driving range. Mono NA County near Moorhead and Pisgah. Loess Hills.

Deer chasing is great in Iowa! I visit to begin getting into long, vigorous walk, a week ago, I've just been to two or three parks. Something that sucks about Iowa is you can just camp in area of outstanding campgrounds inside state parks.

When I lived in Ames, I camped along the South Skunk river from McFarland County Park a few times—there is a nice (but short) trail that leads to the river and some obvious campsites. IIRC, there was also a trail from a rest area on I-35 to this same area.

Also you can camp anywhere within any of the state Wildlife Management Areas. Might not be real good choice this week with deer season on going...but in the summer they are devoid of people.
