There is another thing to consider, though probably not an issue for short-term use (like a week backpacking): many nutrients do not or may not work the same way when isolated or artificially produced. Seems like every time I turn around I read another article that talks about the importance of the whole food, the interactions of all the many, many elements, etc. It would be ironic to eat the carefully balanced pills...and still suffer from nutrient deficits because the body can't use them that way.
I think there might be a science fiction story in that one, given how often space travel depends on artificially produced or recycled foods...

I can't stop thinking of how much this reminds me of the 1992 kidnapping and murder of Exxon executive Sidney Reso committed by Arthur Seale and his wife. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Seale)
Reso was shot in the arm during the kidnapping, but it wasn't a serious wound. He was locked up in a storage unit and died after being given insufficient water and being fed vitamin pills instead of food. I still marvel at how the kidnappers considered vitamins more important than calories to short-term survival. At least the OP is accounting for the latter.

Definitely not. I can really understand the inconvenience of not bring your own meals but I totally cannot accept eating capsules.Maybe you can find other solutions to solve the problem.

Um, what about satiety? A capsule is not going to shut my H-ANGER off.

Food is more than just fuel. Its meant to be enjoyed. The idea of scarfing down 250 capsules is just stupid.

This is screaming military application. Get the number of pills down (maybe make them bigger...?) put them in a tube like thing with water so they could essentially be shotgunned and boom. You have just made a contract with the military, and gotten rid of MREs in the process hahahah!
It is a cool concept. I actually really like the idea. But I wouldn't do this backpacking, simply because it takes some enjoyment and challenge out of it. Now, if I was a fugitive, on the run? Definitely the first thing that I would go to!

It's an interesting concept, and I see it as a niche product; it's not going to replace meals except in an emergency.
I'd think the bulk of 500+ capsules for a day's supply would be more cumbersome than bags of dried food, and I don't know what effect that quantity of gelatin would have on the body. One capsule may be negligible, but I'd think 500+ would have some kind of impact. I'd also be somewhat concerned about that much volume rehydrating in the stomach. Of course they'd be swallowed with water, but you'd have to be sure to drink what you need for the food in addition to staying hydrated.

I quit taking pills when Owsley ceased production of Orange Sunshine and Purple Haze. That was my first randown thought too, then Soylent Green. Full disclosure: I do carry a brick of a lifeboat ration in my ski pack. Life has been good. I have carried two to their expiration date so far. Few years ago, I day hiked and dated someone who only wanted to eat various bars and powders while on the trail. We hadn't for some time, like 3 years and last summer we went out gravel riding on bikes. When I pulled out a cliff bar out of my jersey, I thought she was going to gag.

Energy & nutrient dense capsules of food..don't they already make those? I think they're called peanuts, almonds, cashews...

Pretty obvious that the OP is OK with "I eat because I have to" (not the only one...) and completely missing that there are a few that actually enjoy eating. I am one of those, so pills/capsules/food substitutes/blended stuff has no appeal whatsoever for me. BTW, nuts and SPAM are gluten free.

BTW, nuts and SPAM are gluten free. They are also a delicious and nutritious snack. They will provide a quick pick-me-up in the middle of the afternoon. Jerky works as well as Spam, and is a little quicker. Just a little something to consider.

Interesting thought but i cant imagine swallowing that many pills or carrying them for a month trip. Have you ever looked into making your own versions of plumpynut?
